The Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine brought a little Scottish spirit to Cabot Fest today with kilts, a welly throw and plenty of community fun!

Volunteering at the LCSVM booth were Shanie Tucker and her husband, Jake; Drs. Katie and Chase Darr; Dr. Eason Hildreth and his wife, Emily; Becky Hepler and Maggie Milligan.

The welly throw gave festivalgoers a chance to test their aim by tossing a Wellington boot (rubber rain boot) as far as they could. Add a little friendly competition and some Scottish flair, and it made for a grand day!

We had a wonderful time connecting with our Cabot neighbors, along with our partners at Cabot Animal Support Services.

Everyone was so welcoming, and we’re grateful to be part of a community that has made the Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine feel right at home.

Slàinte mhath! Here’s to good health and good neighbors!

Today, we recognize World Animal Day, a global effort to promote animal welfare through education, awareness and action.

At the Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine, we believe protecting animal health and well-being is at the heart of veterinary medicine. From companion animals and livestock to wildlife and other species, every animal deserves compassionate care and responsible stewardship.

Supported by a gift from the Arkansas Animal Rescue Foundation, the Katharine Reese Shelter Medicine and Animal Welfare Program at LCSVM will provide hands-on training through an on-site teaching hospital/shelter facilities within Cabot Animal Support Services and mobile veterinary units. With shelter medicine being recognized as a specific veterinary specialty under the American Board of Veterinary Specialties, the program will serve as a center of excellence, advancing veterinary education, community outreach and animal welfare across Arkansas and beyond.

At LCSVM, we are building that puts compassion, wellness and the well-being of animals at the center of everything we do. Because caring for animals means caring for the communities and people who depend on them.

Congratulations to Lyon College President Dr. Melissa Taverner on being named one of the Top 100 Women of Arkansas by Little Rock Soirée magazine and the Women’s Foundation of Arkansas.

This is Dr. Taverner’s second time to receive this recognition, having first appeared on the triennial list in 2023.

Those of us at Lyon see every day how much she cares about our students and their success. We’re happy to see her recognized in this way and grateful for her leadership.

Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine Dean Dr. Carolyn Henry and faculty members Dr. Katie Darr and Dr. Chase Darr represented Lyon College Wednesday as Gov. Sarah Sanders brought her Capital for a Day program to Cabot.

Cabot was the 24th Arkansas community selected to host the program, which brings the governor and senior state officials to communities across the state to meet with local officials and residents.

We’re proud to be part of the Cabot community and to have the Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine represented at important events throughout Arkansas, where we can share our commitment to "A Culture of Care."

Lyon College is grateful to our partners at Cabot Animal Support Services for inviting members of the Lyon College Pre-Veterinary and Animal Sciences Club and the Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine team to participate in Saturday’s community vaccine clinic.

The clinic was an incredible success, with 1,354 vaccines administered to pets throughout the day.

The turnout was a wonderful reflection of the Cabot community’s commitment to keeping its pets healthy and protected. For Lyon students, the event also provided a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience while serving the community they hope to one day serve as veterinary professionals.

We are especially grateful to the team at Cabot Animal Support Services for welcoming our students and faculty and for their continued partnership with Lyon College. We also appreciate Pallone Veterinary Hospital and the many volunteers who worked throughout the day to keep the clinic running smoothly.

Community partnerships like this are an important part of the Lyon College School of Veterinary Medicine’s mission. Thank you to CASS for inviting Lyon College to be part of such a meaningful day, and thank you to everyone who brought their pets to the clinic. We are proud to be your neighbor and grateful to serve the Cabot community.
