Faculty Feature: Rochelle L. Johnson👏

Congratulations to Rochelle L. Johnson, Bernie McCain Chair in the Humanities and Professor of Environmental Studies, on receiving national recognition for her outstanding scholarship and writing.

This spring, Johnson was featured in all three episodes of the new PBS Ken Burns documentary on Henry David Thoreau, which aired nationally in March 2026 and is now available for free streaming on PBS.

She was also honored with the 2026 John Burroughs Nature Essay Award for her essay “Phantom Pains,” previously awarded the 2025 Georgia Review Prize. The John Burroughs Nature Essay Award is the nation’s highest annual honor for a single nature essay, with works nominated by publishers for consideration.

Johnson received the award during the 100th anniversary celebration of the John Burroughs Medal on April 13, 2026, in New York City.

We are proud to celebrate Rochelle Johnson and her remarkable contributions to environmental humanities and literary scholarship. 🌿
