Gray stain doesn’t hide sanding mistakes
 it puts them under a spotlight.

In this video, our crew is water popping a collegiate basketball court before buffing in a custom gray stain. Water popping opens the grain and helps achieve a deeper, more uniform stain color—but it also exposes every flaw in the sanding process.

When you’re staining maple, there is nowhere to hide.

Chatter marks, drum lines, edger scratches, wave patterns, and machine defects that might be invisible on a natural floor can become highly visible once stain is applied. That’s why proper equipment maintenance is critical. A worn drum, bad bearing, damaged wheel, misaligned machine, or stretched belt can ruin an entire stain job.

Stained courts demand a higher level of craftsmanship. The sanding must be flawless, the equipment must be dialed in, and the crew must know exactly what they’re doing.

Anyone can apply stain.

The challenge is making 10,000+ square feet of maple look perfectly uniform when the lights come on.

This is why we obsess over sanding. Because the stain will tell the truth.

While many gym floor contractors are buying stock artwork and sending files out to third parties, we’re designing courts from the ground up.

At COURTSPORTS, court design isn’t an add-on service—it’s one of our specialties.

We create custom court layouts, realistic digital renderings, and can show you exactly what your floor will look like from virtually any seat in your arena before a single line is painted. Want to see the view from center court? The upper bleachers? The scorer’s table? We can do that.

Behind the scenes, our large-format printers, plotters, and cutting equipment are running constantly—producing temporary decals, custom stencils, logos, lettering, and artwork for projects across the country. Every logo, every line, every detail is engineered for precision.

In fact, we don’t just design courts for our own projects. We provide design services, artwork, and stencil packages to other gym floor contractors as well.

🏀 20,000 sq. ft. gym floor recoat completed at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Oregon.

💧 Wet screening. Why????

A lot of contractors believe you can't use a heavy-duty cleaning solution while screening a gym floor. Our experience has been the opposite. When done correctly—with immediate water extraction using an industrial squeegee vacuum—wet screening has become our preferred recoat method.

Why?

✅ Removes dirt and grime that dry screening can leave behind
✅ Helps break down oils, silicones, and cleaner residues that can cause coating issues
✅ Virtually dust-free process
✅ Creates a cleaner surface prior to coating

After screening, we also auto-scrub the floor for additional cleaning before applying two coats of OMU.

The question is:

👉 If you've done gym floor recoats, are you wet screening or dry screening—and why?

We've found that the amount of ground-in dirt removed during wet screening can be eye-opening, but we know there are strong opinions on both sides.

14,000 sq. ft. of hardwood looking fresh again at WSU’s Cub Ballroom!

We drum sanded this floor a few years ago and returned today for maintenance coats. Using a satin-finish system from Advantage CoatingsïżŒ that dried in just 2.5 hours, allowing us to get both coats down the same day. No abrasion needed between coats within 48 hours, which saves a ton of time.

And that satin sheen? đŸ”„

Another gym floor damaged by the Bona “craters.”

This time — University of Idaho’s Upper Gym.

We are now at SIXTEEN floors showing the same defect patterns after using defective batches of Bona Sport Poly. These aren’t application mistakes. These aren’t isolated incidents. These are widespread finish failures that continue showing up on floors all over the Northwest and across the country.

As contractors, this is devastating because the floor reflects OUR company name — not the manufacturer’s. Customers don’t see a “bad batch.” They see OUR work.

We’ve spent countless hours trying to repair, hide, screen, recoat, and in some cases completely resand these floors just to protect long-term relationships with our customers.

What’s most frustrating is the lack of accountability, support, and transparency from Bona throughout this entire situation.
