MIT School of Architecture + Planning's startup accelerator for urban innovation DesignX is an accelerator for innovation in the built environment.

MIT's SA+P students, faculty and academic staff in Architecture, Planning, Media, Real Estate, and Art are among the most entrepreneurial at MIT. They have started over 560 firms that are innovating changes in cities and the built environment worldwide. DesignX is an entrepreneurial accelerator for student ventures that aims to transform the built environment, media, and design. The heart of DesignX is an academic program in which participants receive financial support to develop their ventures, mentored by an experienced entrepreneur, and a program of lectures, visits to innovative firms, and networking opportunities. Open to teams and individuals, DesignX offers the tools, capital, skills, and network to create and launch new ventures and innovative approaches to design, planning, real estate, media, and art.

Applications are now open for the MITdesignX 2025 cohort!

MITdesignX seeks diverse, interdisciplinary teams working on challenging ideas with clear vision, passion and drive to design solutions and launch a real venture. Applications go through a rigorous selection process that reviews ideas based on human, environmental and social impact, feasibility, uniqueness, and scalability as well as team composition, diversity and skillset.

Join us for a 24-hour impact hackathon!

In collaboration with — one of the world’s top design schools — MITdesignX will be hosting a 24-hour impact hackathon, open to all MIT students and affiliates, taking place Saturday, October 19th at 9AM through Sunday, October 20th at 9AM at

Participants will be assigned to a team comprised of two participants from MIT and two students from Politecnico di Milano and will co-create possible innovation opportunities to address the climate crisis and other urgent societal conditions. At the end of the 24 hours, participants will pitch their idea and prototype to a panel.

Meals and snacks will be provided throughout the 24 hours. This is a one-of-a-kind event and spots are limited! Sign up by October 11 at the link in bio.

Last week at our annual pitch event, the 2024 MITdesignX cohort emerged from our accelerator program and launched an incredibly diverse set of high-impact startups into the world.

Twelve new startups demonstrated their technology and pitched their venture ideas to a crowded room full of supporters, investors and colleagues, highlighting the work they've completed during their 5-month MITdesignX tenure. All teams received $10,000 grants for completing the program, and in addition, the following teams were awarded special pitch day prizes of $5,000 each:

Most Innovative venture: Cortado
Most Impactful venture: TOPPA
Best Presentation: Mí.katã

This year we ran our first program in Dubai, UAE with amazing outcomes for 12 international startups and 12 MIT interns. MITdesignX together with partnered with entrepreneurial development group to lead a startup accelerator focused on the sustainable growth of urban environments (mdxb.mit.edu).
