Join the MIT Department of Architecture and the Architecture and Urbanism group for the next installment of the Fall 2026 lecture series on October 15 (6pm ET), featuring Giovanni Bellotti and Alessandra Covini of Studio Ossidiana.

Studio Ossidiana is a design practice based in the Netherlands, working across scales to create spaces, objects, exhibitions, and installations at the intersection of architecture, design, art, and landscape. The studio’s projects include experimental playgrounds for children and adults, floating gardens inhabited by birds, outdoor kitchens, land art pavilions on water, to be explored and cultivated by humans and other species.

Led by Alessandra Covini and Giovanni Bellotti, with Klaas van der Molen joining the studio in 2025, Studio Ossidiana collaborates with international institutions including the Centre Pompidou and the National Museum in Oslo. The studio’s work has been presented at the Venice Architecture Biennale (2021–2023), Milan Triennale (2022), Shenzhen Architecture Biennale (2022), Istanbul Design Biennial (2021), Chicago Architecture Biennial (2021), and Bruges Triennial (2024).

“Rafi Segal: Architecture Dialogues” presents sketches, drawings, models, photographs, and video projections of recent buildings and designs. Framed as a series of architectural “dialogues” between building and city, object and landscape, mass and void, private and shared space, the work explores how architecture can promote new forms of gathering, care, and cohabitation.

Rafi Segal is an architect and Professor of Architecture and Urbanism at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). His practice undertakes design and research work on the architectural, urban and regional scale, with projects in the US, Greece, Czech Republic, and Kosovo.

Unlearning the Anthropocene
Architecture after Human Exceptionalism

Mireia Luzárraga is an architect, researcher, educator, and co-founder of TAKK, an architecture and research practice based in Barcelona and New York, together with Alejandro Muiño. Her work explores the intersection of architecture, ecology, feminism, and politics, investigating how spatial practice can foster more equitable forms of life and new material imaginaries for the built environment.

The lecture presents TAKK's design methodology through a selection of research and built projects that challenge anthropocentric assumptions in contemporary architecture. Integrating feminist thought, political ecology, and low-embedded-carbon material practices, it explores how critical theory becomes a design tool for questioning inherited spatial paradigms. Through research, experimentation, and construction, the lecture proposes architecture as a practice of negotiating new relationships between humans, other living beings, materials, and environmental systems, imagining more just, regenerative, and multispecies futures.

A number of community members from the Department of Architecture are participating in the inaugural MIT Future Fest, a creative festival starting next week from September 30 – October 4!

MIT Future Fest unlocks labs, workshops, and theaters across campus for five days of in-person experiences, exhibitions, tours, performances, and unexpected connections — pulling renowned researchers and curious first-timers alike into the shared thrill of discovery and action.

As part of the festival, on October 3, the MIT School of Architecture + Planning opens the Metropolitan Storage Warehouse to the public for a day of exhibitions, conversations, and discovery across the school’s new shared home. The Department of Architecture will host several activities as part of this open house. Admission is free!
