PHOTOGRAPHY BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS 2013-2014

DEPARTMENT MISSION
The mission of the Photography Department, at The Lesley University College of Art and Design (LUCAD), is to educate our students within an internationally recognized program that is committed to a balance of traditional photographic practice and cutting edge contemporary media within an intimate and evolving learning environment. The department emphasizes and encourages artistic and professional instruction, conceptual and perceptual awareness, critical thinking within contemporary and historical contexts, the collaborative nature of contemporary art, and the technical and aesthetic knowledge necessary for a life and career in the photographic arts. At LA+D, 24 diverse photo faculty members who represent a variety of viewpoints, techniques, backgrounds, disciplines, and approaches within the medium will be your mentors. Classes are intimate and these artist/teachers will help you train your eye as well as your mind. LUCAD's vibrant community of beginning and advanced photography students (including, of course, you), work and thrive in our state-of-the-art facilities with equipment that provides the tools needed to realize any vision, concept, or inspiration. INTERNSHIPS
To help prepare you for the real world, which to us means professional skills and industry contacts, we require and assist students in obtaining a wide range of internships. Past internships have included: Magnum Picture Agency; National Geographic; Annie Leibovitz Studio; Oxfam America; Ken Burns Films; The Boston Globe; Institute of Contemporary Art; Photographic Resource Center; Boston Magazine

RETURN ON INVESTMENT
Over 70% of recent LA+D graduates were employed in a new position in fields including the arts, business, the non-profit sector, education and entrepreneurship within 3–to¬–12 months after graduation. Those majoring in Photography found employment at various studios and firms, including Historic New England and Albright Art Gallery, working as photographers, videographers, digital imaging technicians, gallery directors, and teachers. THE AIB/LESLEY CONNECTION
AIB is an art school through and through (come visit and you'll immediately see what we mean). We also offer the extraordinary benefit of being one of four schools within Lesley University – a multi-site liberal arts university based in Cambridge just across the Charles River from Boston. At Lesley University College of Art and Design (LA+D), you get all the best attributes of a small, private art school. At the same time, you have access to all the financial aid, other areas of study, and resources of a larger university. So while you have outstanding studio space and art school facilities, you also have the opportunity to earn scholarships, grants, and self-help aid on campus. You'll have access to excellent libraries, active sports teams, career resources.

“The best thing is having so many resources – from studio space to materials to supportive teachers – to help you reach your goals.” -Tara Sellios, Class of 2010

Join Fabrication for Exhibition for the reception of Multiplicity: December 3, 5-7PM 💫💫💫
Inspired by Walt Whitman’s evocative prose, “I am large, I contain multitudes,” Multiplicity invites students in the Fabrication for Exhibition course to explore the theme through the lenses of identity and self-construction.

Getting close! Day something of the Senior Spotlight 🔦
Cat Nguyen (she/hers) writes "A hyphen attaches two words together. It acts as a bridge. I am on that bridge, walking back and forth. I am Vietnamese and I am American, but sometimes I feel as if I am one more than the other—leaving me suspended in between.

Hyphenated is a series that explores the intersections that I feel with my identity as a Vietnamese-American woman. It also emphasizes the urge that I have to reconnect with my Vietnamese heritage. Through the lens, I capture how I see certain aspects of my culture as a person who feels super distant from it. By focusing on the people in my life, depictions of certain rituals, and also the importance of objects, it helps me learn more about where my family comes from and how I am influenced by it as their
child who was born in the United States." 🌸

Cat's work will be on display as part of the exhibition "As a result of Time" on view May 9-19th. Opening reception: May 16, 6-8PM, Lunder Arts Center 🫧

It's a Monday and time for Senior Spotlight 🔦. Ty Gagliardone (he/his) writes about his series '527 Drum Heller Rd' "In 1992 my parents bought 27 acres of land in Sharon, Vermont. 8 years later they finished construction of our current home, in time for my birth in May 2001. From the very start, they chose to prioritize quality of life, community, and sustainability, often sacrificing convivence. It is from this narrative that I now consider the world around me with curiosity and criticality. I use the camera to chart my path, searching for an answer to the question: how do I create a meaningful life?" 🔮

Ty's work will be on display as part of the exhibition "As a result of Time" on view May 9-19th. Opening reception: May 16, 6-8PM, Lunder Arts Center 🪐

Back at the Senior Spotlight 🔦 Anna Sullivan (she/her) writes about her project "Within this work, I am interested in the nuances and complexities of the female relationship. My subjectivity as a le***an and a twin sister is central to this work, and the women closest to me serve as the foundation. The ineffable nature of being a twin informs my connections with other women and my understanding of them. Within this work, I observe the women around me, my relationships with them, and their relationships with each other. This body of work weaves together imagery to create a visual world that represents femininity, intimacy, and queerness, as well as my identity, and my shared experiences of womanhood." .photo 🌱

Anna's work will be on display as part of the exhibition "As a result of Time" on view May 9-19th. Opening reception: May 16, 6-8PM, Lunder Arts Center

Senior Spotlight Day 4 🔦 with Izzy O'Hagan (she/they). "Tethering finds connections to ancestry through the land and objects both found and inherited. Talismans passed down, folktales preserving fading histories, and rock cairns and walls that have witnessed time. They keep me grounded in my ancestral landscape as I navigate boundaries physical and otherworldly. I search for ways to pass through these barriers and hold these histories close to me through time."

Izzy's work will be on display as part of the exhibition "As a result of Time" on view May 9-19th. Opening reception: May 16, 6-8PM, Lunder Arts Center ⭐️
