We are delighted to announce that ✨ Ju Yon Kim, Patsy Takemoto Mink Professor of English at Harvard University✨, will lead our Fall EMR Scholars Seminar, 📖 Paper Performance: Suspicion and Asian American Archives 📜

Harvard Undergrads interested in participating should apply here:

🔗 tinyurl.com/EMR-10-15-26
⏰ due by Tuesday, 10/15/26!

In this seminar, students will examine state documents that U.S. government agencies have used to manage groups deemed suspect, such as Chinese immigrants in the early 20th century, Filipino revolutionaries during U.S. colonization, Japanese Americans during World War II, and student activists in the 1960s and 1970s. We will explore how these papers inscribed and demanded performances, or embodied presentations under observation by the state, and how those under suspicion came to mediate their relationship to the state through both paper and performance. In addition, we will consider questions of archival research, such as challenges that arise in reading documents used for surveillance and detention, and models for interacting with such documents inspired by dramaturgical practices..

The seminar will be held in person, on:

🗓️ Friday, October 30th
⏰ 2-4 PM
📍 1100 Mass Ave, Room 202.

You must be able to attend this time in order to participate in the seminar. (If there are scheduling conflicts, we can provide a support letter to request time-off to attend the seminar.)

Seminar participants commit to completing an assigned set of readings and attending the full two-hour session in person. All participants will be provided with a free copy of Dr. Kim’s book Paper Performance ahead of the seminar.

Selection notes: EMR Scholars accepts 5 undergraduate Harvard College students per seminar. Selection is based on a student’s holistic preparation and statement of interest. Members of previous seminars can apply again, but we will prioritize applicants who have not yet participated. (Note: Graduate students are also welcome to apply, but registration priority will be give to undergraduates.)

EMR invites applications to join our Dissertation Working Group for the upcoming school year! APPLY BY FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH!

The Dissertation Working Group of the Committee on Ethnicity, Migration, Rights (EMR), supports post-exams doctoral students doing research on topics related to ethnic studies, race, Indigeneity, borders, and migration. Doctoral students from all Harvard schools and departments are welcome to apply.

This is EMR’s ninth year hosting this group, which provides interdisciplinary exchange, non-judgmental support, and accountability toward each member’s personal writing goals. Sessions include time for checking in and building community, and revolve around discussing pre-circulated drafts of works in progress.

The group will meet Fridays from 12-2pm ET approximately biweekly across the semester. Depending on the availability & preference of applicants, we will either have sessions on Zoom on in-person. A year-long commitment is preferred, but applicants that can only do a single semester may be accepted on a case by case basis.

The working group this year will be convened by Dr. J. Rubén Díaz Vásquez, Lecturer in Latinx Studies at EMR. For questions, please contact him at [email protected].

Meet EMR Faculty: ✨ Dr. Leslie J. Fernandez, Lecturer in Asian American Studies & EMR Program Director ✨

Leslie is a scholar of Asian & Asian American Studies, critical race and ethnic studies, postcolonialism & anti-colonialism, science & technology studies, and science fiction. Their book project, titled “Asiandroid: Techno-Orientalism and the AI Imaginary,” examines the relationship between race and technology by analyzing representations of robots, androids, and artificial intelligence in comparison with Orientalist and techno-Orientalist discourse. My work can be found in Textual Practice and Extrapolation.
