“What DOGE brings to the table is now a warranted perception that government jobs are also precarious,” says HKS professor and public management expert Elizabeth Linos.

This perception adds to an already established recruitment and retention challenge, she explains, and may lead to a longterm human capital crisis that will take decades to fix.

Now that DOGE has officially sunset, U.S. citizens are left wondering: Did the initiative save taxpayer money? Did it help deliver better government services?

We turned to HKS professor and public management expert Elizabeth Linos to analyze the effectiveness of the Department of Government Efficiency.

“We now have worse services; we’ve had to rehire people as consultants; and they’re refilling positions with political loyalists,” says Linos.
