How is the superintendent’s role evolving?

On Tuesday, Senior Lecturer Jennifer Perry Cheatham, founder of the Initiative on Superintendent as Civic Leader (ISCL), moderated a conversation with ISCL fellows Russell Booker, Kyla Johnson-Trammell, and Michael Matsuda.

They explored the skills, civic leadership, and community partnerships needed to lead public schools in a changing landscape.

What if we could identify children at risk of developing learning disabilities before they even start kindergarten?

HGSE’s Nadine Gaab studies how brain development in early childhood can reveal a child’s risk for learning disabilities — sometimes as early as 18 months. Her research aims to identify children early so they can receive support and grow into happy, healthy, joyful learners.

We’re at the Teach For America Summit this weekend, connecting with educators and leaders committed to transforming education.

As we gather with the TFA community, we’re also highlighting the connection between public service and education leadership at HGSE.

We spoke with Christina Grant, HGSE faculty member and executive director of the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University, about what she gained from public service and what she would tell others considering a similar path. We also talked about HGSE’s newly launched Public Service Priority Pathway.

“It’s a privilege to teach, and I’m really grateful I chose Teach For America and that they chose me,” Grant shared.

For online master’s students and faculty alike, one word captured their weekend on campus: “amazing.”

Students from HGSE’s online master’s International Education Policy and Management (IEPM) pathway — which represents over 30 countries — showed how community can grow across screens, time zones, and distance.

The first two cohorts of the IEPM pathway reunited on campus to deepen those connections face-to-face.

Join HGSE's Initiative on Superintendent as Civic Leader (ISCL) at Harvard to explore how superintendents can build trust, navigate conflict, and advance equity through educational leadership.

The conversation will be moderated by Jennifer Cheatham, senior lecturer and chair of ISCL, and feature three former superintendents.
