What happens when teachers take the lead in their own learning?

When Paul Tritter, Ed.M.’12, stepped into the inaugural role of director of professional learning for the Boston Teachers Union, he wanted to understand educators’ needs firsthand.

“Educators wanted to be able to meet and share practices with people from other schools who did the same work they did,” he says.

That vision led to the creation of the Telescope Network, a peer-led professional learning community designed by educators, for educators.

Data isn’t just numbers and spreadsheets — it’s the everyday evidence educators collect in the classroom. From observations to student work and progress reports, this evidence helps teachers better understand what students need to learn and thrive.

Harvard's Data Wise helps educators make sense of that evidence so they can improve teaching, advance equity, and strengthen collaboration. And with hundreds of certified coaches, schools are getting more support to put the Data Wise framework into practice.

“Teaching is a practice. We never master it. Every school, every student is unique,” says Gustavo Luna, Ed.M.’22, Ed.L.D.’25, a certified coach. “Knowing how to recognize, use, and, importantly, share data is what allows us to improve.”

Transformation starts with community.

Harvard’s Deeper Learning Alliance is bringing together school leaders from around the world who are redesigning schools grounded in purpose, joy, and connection.

“Transforming a school is too important — and too hard — to do alone,” says Alisa Berger, executive director of the Deeper Learning Institute.
