Professor Jewell had a great time with Dr. Shushma Malik and Dr. Virginia Closs chatting about Nero with Rajan Datar for the BBC World Service show “The Forum”. More good news in the History Department: Prof. Evan Jewell has been awarded a Rome Prize in Ancient Studies at the American Academy in Rome for 2022-23. He will live in residence at the Academy in Rome and work on his book on youth in the Roman empire during the year.

The American Academy in Rome has announced the winners of the 2022–23 Rome Prize and Italian Fellowships.

Some good news in the Department of History! Prof. Susan Mokhberi has won the Iran World Book Award for her first book, "The Persian Mirror" (Oxford University Press)!

ATTENTION: History Club enthusiasts!

The semester's end is rapidly approaching and we have one final event for you! Next week, on Wednesday, December 8, during free period (11:20am-12:20pm), we welcome Associate Teaching Professor Kimberlee Moran from the Department of Chemistry. She is Director of the Forensics Program and is the recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching this year (as well as the Chancellor's award!). In addition to running the Forensics Program, Prof. Moran is a professional archaeologist with experience excavating in many contexts, including Native American sites in New Jersey. She will be joining us to talk about:

"Excavating the First Baptist Church of Philadelphia: When History Meets Archaeology."

The event will be held in-person at the Department of History seminar room in the ground floor of 429 Cooper.

Masks will be required, as per University policy.

We hope to see you there!

Last Friday, the History Club had a great time at the Penn Museum being led on a tour of the Near Eastern and Mediterranean collections by Professor and Curator Brian Rose (of UPenn). We had 18 students attend--lots of fun!

Excellent piece in the Washington Post today by Emerita Professor Janet Golden, offering much needed historical perspective on why anti-vaxxers have gained a larger following than they did a century ago. Short answer: the internet and the media's reticence to take an overtly negative stance towards them (outside of op-eds).

But the media is treating him differently than it treated Matthew Joseph Rodermund more than a century ago.
