✨HCBC Friend Spotlight: Brittney Swicionis ✨

From Chicago to Cape Girardeau, Brittney took a leap of faith—and never looked back. After earning both her Bachelor’s (2017) and Master’s (2019) degrees at SEMO, she turned challenges into opportunities, landing in a career with Big Brothers Big Sisters while also becoming a business owner at just 25 (Board & Brush Creative Studio, Cape Girardeau).

Today, she balances multiple roles: Associate Regional Director for ABCToday Networks, franchise owner, adjunct instructor at SEMO, and a certified personal trainer & fitness instructor—all while staying deeply involved in her community.

Her advice?
“Life is not linear… embrace the challenges, learn from mistakes, and find joy in the journey.”

From Hackathon winner to real-world impact!
What started as a winning idea at the Harrison College of Business and Computing’s “AI for a Smarter Tomorrow” Hackathon is now helping people identify scams, phishing attempts, and suspicious online content before they become victims.
Meet Bhavya Narula, a graduate student in SEMO’s Applied Computer Science program and the founder of TrustFall—an AI-powered cybersecurity platform that helps users analyze suspicious texts, emails, links, and screenshots with clear, easy-to-understand explanations.
In just a few weeks, TrustFall has grown from a Hackathon project into a working platform, thanks to Bhavya’s innovation, faculty mentorship, and support from the SEMO community.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Michelle Brune as the interim dean of the Harrison College of Business and Computing!
She brings more than 20 years of experience in academic affairs, facilities management, and advancement, along with a strong commitment to supporting students, faculty, and the university community.
She holds a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Missouri, a master’s degree in Public Administration, and a B.S. in Human Environmental Studies from SEMO.
We look forward to working with Dr. Brune as she leads the HCBC into this next chapter!

Meet Dr. Lori Mueller from the Department of Management! A distinguished instructor at HCBC for many years, Dr. Mueller has made a lasting impact on students through her dedication and passion for teaching. She teaches Introduction to Computer Applications (MI101) and Microsoft Excel Certification (MI001), helping students build valuable technology and workplace skills.

Fun fact: Dr. Mueller loves to read, and her go-to order from Burrito-Ville is the black bean and rice dirty fry burrito!
