Shout out to Kristen Tarno.

A Provisionally Licensed Professional Counselor (PLPC) at Great Oak Counseling also an adjunct instructor at Mineral Area Community College.
Graduate of Southeast Missouri State University with a master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling in 2025 and recently graduated with an Education Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Counseling this past May. She is working toward becoming a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) as well as becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC).
At present, she works with individuals across a variety of populations, with a particular passion for working with children.
She is passionate about counseling because she finds it to be deeply fulfilling work and strongly believe that mental health is equally as important as physical health.

Shout out to Maggie Salem a graduate from the Department of Psychology and Counseling with a Master of Arts in School Counseling in 2024 and an Education Specialist in Counseling in 2025.

I have been working at New Vision Youth & Family Services, LLC as a Mental Health Counselor for two years. I work primarily with children but also see adolescents and adults. My counseling style incorporates sandtray therapy, play-based interventions, Internal Family Systems, and person-centered talk therapy. As of now, I'm still a PLPC, but will be fully licensed very soon! I'm also a 500-hour registered yoga teacher and Yogi Beans certified kid's yoga teacher. I teach adult yoga classes at Yoga East Healing Arts Studio as well as kids yoga classes at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. In January of this year, I was able to utilize my knowledge of Yoga in a new way as an Adjunct Professor at SEMO in the Department of Allied Health, Kinesiology, and Sport Sciences teaching AT148-Yoga. At the end of June, I will be training with Jivana Heyman, founder of Accessible Yoga, and I am very excited! I am so grateful for my time at Southeast, both for my undergraduate degree in Music Education and my graduate degrees in Counseling. The professors have certainly set me up for success and I continue to hold SEMO close to my heart.

Shoutout to Timothy Mayfield, an alumnus of our B.S. in Psychology program! He is continuing his academic journey by earned his Specialist in Education (EdS) in Mental Health Counseling at Arkansas State University, and is now working toward his PhD at the University of the Cumberlands. We are so proud of his accomplishments and can’t wait to see all he achieves!

"I graduated from SEMO with a degree in psychology in December 2009. I chose to move to be closer to family after that and enrolled at Arkansas State University. A degree from SEMO allowed me to get a job at the local community mental health agency. I graduated with a Specialist in Education (EdS) in May of 2014 and began my career in mental health counseling. I became a Licensed Professional Counselor in 2017. A few years later, I completed the coursework to become an approved counselor supervisor, LPC-S. I enrolled in a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision in the fall of 2025. My time in the psychology program at SEMO undoubtedly helped prepare me for graduate work and a meaningful career in mental health."
