The second year graduate students from the CDS program are in their Summer intercession class! Portrayed is their Voice class, taught by Dr. Maria Claudia Franca in which the students created model larynx’s and learned how to place a laryngeal scope to be able to see the vocal folds in action!

Southern Illinois University Carbondale’s Graduate School is recognizing two former graduate students and a former doctoral student for their outstanding research and contributions to their fields.

Congratulation to Dr. Maria Claudia Franca, a professor in the CDS program and Health Sciences who recently received the Women of Distinction Award as part of the SIU Excellence Awards!

Her research contributions include voice science and professional voice issues, multicultural and global aspects of communication, and higher education matters. She has disseminated findings at state, national, and international professional conferences and has contributed journal articles, books, and book chapters on associated matters.

Dr. Franca holds leadership appointments at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and the Illinois Speech-Language-Hearing Association.

SIU Carbondale’s Nursing Program brought pediatric emergency care to the forefront through a powerful collaboration with SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Outreach and the Illinois Critical Access Hospital Network (ICAHN)!

The Pediatric Symposium at SIU Carbondale was an incredible day of collaboration, learning, and hands-on skill development in pediatric emergency care.
This impactful event brought together nursing students, registered nurses, and EMS providers to learn with and from one another in a truly interprofessional environment.

Participants engaged in a full day of expert-led sessions and simulation experiences covering critical pediatric topics, including trauma, respiratory illness, tracheostomy care, newborn stabilization, seizures, and sepsis. The hands-on simulation stations provided real-world application, strengthening clinical judgment and improving readiness for pediatric emergencies, especially in rural and community settings.

With continuing education hours available and strong attendance across disciplines, this symposium reflects a shared commitment to advancing pediatric care and supporting the rural healthcare workforce.
We are grateful to our partners, speakers, and participants who made this event a success and look forward to building on this momentum in the future.
