Some amazing projects are underway in the Imagination Lab today! Students are designing their own 3D printed games that fit neatly inside of an Altoids tin. Didn’t get a chance to register for one of our sessions in advance? No worries! The Imagination Lab will be open until 2:15 today, so feel free to swing by Wham 210 and join in the fun.

The School of Education invites you to join us for a special pregame tailgate as the Salukis take on Southeast Missouri State University in the “War for the Wheel” game on Saturday, September 12, 2026.

As part of SIU's Family Weekend celebration, we are bringing together alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents, and friends of the School of Education for an afternoon of Saluki spirit. Food, drinks, and complimentary tickets to the big game will be available to attendees while supplies last!

Our Fall 2026 Pre-Student Teacher Orientation is in the books!

The Office of Teacher Education welcomed new and returning teacher candidates to the fall semester this evening with a session that delved into program expectations, addressed common questions, and shared both advice and key resources that will help support them on their journeys. Teacher candidates were also able to build connections with peers and our amazing team of clinical supervisors during small group sessions designed to help them prepare for the start of their fall clinical experiences.

Good luck, teacher candidates! We can’t wait to see the amazing work you’ll accomplish this year.

Our newest group of future Saluki educators is officially on campus! The School of Education was thrilled to welcome our students to Southern Illinois University Carbondale today. Participants were able to create vision boards with Dean Groves-Scott and our academic advisors before visiting our SoE Resource Fair to learn about all of the opportunities and organizations available to future educators at SIU. After today’s session, we can confirm that the rumors are true: we have an absolutely amazing group of students joining the SoE this fall!

Interested in working for the School of Education? We are currently seeking a full-time program coordinator for the Grow Your Own Teachers (GYO) program!

Since 2018, the School of Education has led the GYO-Southern program to address teacher shortages and promote equity in rural and minority communities throughout the region. The grant received from the Illinois Board of Higher Education enables the program to support nontraditional student teacher candidates. The program coordinator will serve as an institutional representative for Southern Illinois University with a focus on GYO program support and expansion. This position will work with the designated program advisor to develop student friendly rapport with prospective and admitted students to cultivate relationships, share information on admission and registration requirements, present the many attributes of quality off-campus programs, and assist with developing and implementing recruitment and retention strategies.

The School of Education recently earned an approved Educator Preparation Provider Badge from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) in recognition of our commitment to high-quality educator preparation! This badge was awarded after our recent completion of ISBE’s 2026 Annual Program Reporting process. This yearly report plays an essential role in maintaining a standard of excellence in educator preparation across Illinois.

🌟 Graduate Student Spotlight 🌟

Meet Tingjia Guo, a doctoral student in the SIU School of Education at Southern Illinois University.

Tingjia’s research explores the ethical dimensions of teachers’ emotional labor by bringing together perspectives from Nel Noddings’ ethic of care and Confucian philosophy. Her work examines how educators navigate the responsibilities of caring for students while balancing equity, advocacy, and the emotional demands of teaching.

A dedicated scholar, Tingjia presented her research paper, “Navigating Ethical Tensions of Teachers’ Emotional Labor: Confucius with Noddings,” at the American Educational Studies Association (AESA) Annual Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Through her research, she seeks to advance conversations about sustainable teaching practices, educator well-being, and the role of empathy in education.

We are proud to recognize Tingjia’s contributions to educational research and her commitment to fostering more equitable and supportive learning environments.
