Last year, after the then-3L team won the Child Welfare and Adoption Law Competition, the then-2L team said they were going to come back the next year and win it again. Well, guess what? THEY DID!! Under the guidance of Moot Court alumnus Michael Lennix, SIU Law is the two-times champion of CWAL! Our current 2L team also did very well, advancing to the quarterfinal rounds. Here are Coach Michael's comments about both teams:

"Our 2L team of Kaitlyn Coffey, Timothy Hogan, and Jack Lakenburges showed true promise. The 2L team advanced to the second round of elimination and, though their performances were very strong, the other team’s performance was near flawless. I have the utmost confidence that they will be in the final round next year, but I am truly proud of their performance.

"The 3L team, comprised of Katherine Bauer, Alicia Bridges, and Nicholas Limentato… won… the whole competition. On their way to the top they avenged the 2Ls, beating the team that edged them out. The performances were outstanding, at times making my own eyes well with tears of pride. They beat teams with brief awards and oralist awards. Additionally, Alicia Bridges won best oralist for the final round with her own amazing performance."

Last weekend, SIU competed in the Anderson Center Seventh Circuit Moot Court Competition in Chicago. This was a unique format involving round robin brackets and advocates who were "on brief specialists" and "off brief specialists." The team of Maggie Doane and Sean McDowell had the third best Appellant's brief. The team unfortunately ended up in a three-team round robin bracket with the first and second best briefs, and the competition took a deep cut from the preliminaries to only four advancing teams. Maggie and Sean nonetheless did a great job and received many compliments from the panels, who were comprised mainly of sitting federal district court judges!

This weekend SIU teams are competing in California and Ohio to wrap up moot court season. Stay tuned!

Exciting weekend at the ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition Las Vegas Regional! Our 2L team won Best Brief and advanced to the regional semifinals. Our 3L team advanced to the regional finals and Michael Keeney was named the second best oralist in the competition. All six advocates did an outstanding job representing SIU, not only by working hard to get ready but by their attitude and camaraderie. Thank you to everyone who mooted the teams because it was your questions that made sure we didn't get asked anything we couldn't handle!

We're grateful for all of the alumni and friends of SIU Law who judge moot court. Our spring national competition preparation is underway and we hope to see many of you again, or for the first time! The Civil Rights and Liberties competition wrapped up this weekend. We advanced to the elimination tournament and won recognition for having one of the top briefs!
