Updates from the Salem Community College Campus Store:
1. They have moved. 2. They are now open for the semester!

The Campus Store has a new and (even more) convenient location. They have moved to the Student Union in Donaghay Hall. In addition, today they opened for the fall semester. Hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday-Thursday.

The store features SCC gear such as t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and caps, as well as glass gift items made by Salem glass students. They also offer candy, snacks and drinks.

Last week, SCC's Glass Education Center had some special visitors! Senator Cory Booker and his team visited the GEC to learn more about the state-of-the-art Center and SCC’s renowned glass programs.

During his visit, Senator Booker toured the studio and learned more about Salem’s Scientific Glass Technology and Glass Art degree programs, students’ educational and career pathways, as well as the Center’s extracurricular events and workshops.

Senator Booker, along with his Senior Constituent Advocate Ashley Bauer, also took part in a hands-on glassblowing activity; and, if you’re wondering, they both did an amazing job!

A big thank you to Senator Booker and his entire team for spending time with at the Center, engaging with students and faculty, and learning more about the exciting work happening at SCC’s Glass Education Center.

Thank you also to Salem County Deputy Director Cordy Taylor; County Commissioners Ed Ramsay and Paul Collier; and Salem County Surrogate and former County Commissioner Dr. Mickey Ostrum for joining us, as well as for the County’s ongoing support of our students’ education at Salem Community College.

Nine community leaders are raising funds for scholarships at the Salem Community College Foundation’s “Dancing with the SCC Stars” on Friday, September 18.

The evening of fun, food and live entertainment starts at 5:30 p.m. in Davidow Hall. Cost is $125 per person, which includes a dinner buffet by DiPaolo’s, an open bar and a silent auction. Guests are encouraged to wear business casual in red, white and blue, to celebrate the nation’s milestone birthday.

The Foundation collaborates with the BlueBallRoom Dance Studio and LaPierre Ballroom Dance Studio, and these community leaders:

A crowd of students, families and community members filled the Pennsville Memorial High School stadium for Salem Community College’s first football game. 🏈

The Mighty Oaks took on the Hudson Valley Community College Vikings. The final score was:

The countdown is on…just one day to Salem Community College’s first football game!

On Saturday, August 29 at 1 p.m. the SCC Mighty Oaks will take on the Hudson Valley Community College Vikings at Pennsville Memorial High School, 110 South Broadway, Pennsville. Be there to support the Mighty Oaks as they kick off their inaugural season.

SCC ranks as South Jersey’s best community college in the 2026 NICHE Best Community Colleges in New Jersey rating! This marks the fifth year in a row that SCC has held this distinction. According to NICHE, the Best Community College ranking is based on a rigorous analysis of academic, financial and student life data from the U.S. Department of Education along with reviews from students and alumni.

“Often I express this is a great place to be and this is a great time to be here,” said President Dr. Michael R. Salem Community College Associate Professor of Art Jenna Lucente and part-time Glass Art Instructor Amy Lemaire have received grants to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into special class projects this fall.

Through the New Jersey Council of County Colleges (NJCCC), a state-wide committee chose 40 proposals for $1,000 faculty mini-grants. NJCCC partnered with the NJ AI Hub, with funding for this initiative through the NJ AI Hub’s corporate partnership with Microsoft.

“Amy Lemaire and Jenna Lucente are past recipients of the SCC Academic Excellence Award, so they had already distinguished themselves as exemplary faculty members,” said SCC Vice President Ken Robell. “This new recognition ranks them among the top faculty in New Jersey.

“It is especially noteworthy that Amy and Jenna are the only two mini-grants awarded in New Jersey in the area of Fine Art,” Robell continued. “This highlights the excellence of the Fine Art programs at SCC.”

Both faculty members are developing innovative approaches for integrating artificial intelligence into teaching and learning.

Lemaire (pictured at a flameworking torch at SCC’s Samuel and Jean Jones Glass Education Center) will create a project involving the development and testing of a lightweight AI-assisted image-processing tool for educational use. Students will upload source imagery into a simplified interface that processes files into print-ready transparencies for photoresist exposure workflows in the course FNA 120 Cold Glass Assemblage & Surface Treatment.

Lucente will create an activity for the ART 205 Painting course utilizing AI to generate portraits and/or landscapes based upon written descriptions created by students. The class members will then paint those portraits and/or landscapes, as they would paint any work of fine art. Students will exhibit their work and ask the audience to comment.

The NJCCC noted the creativity and quality of the submissions underscored the leadership of New Jersey community college faculty in advancing teaching and learning.

“The proposals reflected a thoughtful commitment to helping students develop AI literacy, use AI ethically and responsibly, and prepare for careers in an increasingly AI-enabled workforce,” said NJCCC Chief Academic Officer Linda B. Scherr, Ph.D. “The creativity and quality of the submissions underscore the leadership of New Jersey community college faculty in advancing teaching and learning.

“We look forward to showcasing the innovative work emerging from this program throughout the coming academic year,” Scherr said.

Fitness Concepts (HPE 107): Mondays & Wednesdays, 1–1:50 p.m.
Weight Training (HPE 114): Wednesdays, 9–10:50 a.m.
Pilates (HPE 122): Tuesdays & Thursdays, 11–11:50 a.m.

Build strength, improve fitness and learn healthy movement skills. Classes are designed for beginners and experienced participants.
