Salem Community College Glass Education Center The GEC hosts the annual International Flameworking Conference. Salem Community College's Glass Education Center is home to two glass degree programs.

Salem Community College's Glass Education Center (GEC) offers degree programs in Scientific Glass Technology (only of its kind in US) and Glass Art, and non-credit glass workshops. We offer an associate degree in art and an associate in scientific glass. Our Associate in Applied Science degree is the only in the country for Scientific Glass Technology. The SCC Glass Education Center is also home to the annual International Flameworking Conference.

Join us at Salem Community College, January 4–8, 2027, for five days of immersive, hands-on glassmaking workshops led by talented instructors!

Whether you're just getting started or ready to explore advanced techniques, there's a workshop waiting for you.

Mathieu Grodet | “Build It, Pull It, Slice It” | Flameworking/Murrine
Discover the art and history of murrine, from ancient Egyptian glass to Venetian traditions and contemporary techniques. Learn to compose images in glass, explore the Franchini technique, and manipulate hot glass to create intricate cane designs that reveal unique imagery when sliced. Build your designs day by day, experimenting with complexity, flameworking, and coldworking to create your own original pieces!

Stephen Peirce & Katie Severance | “Lathe the Good Times Roll” Intermediate to Advanced Borosilicate Flameworking & Latheworking
Ready to take your lathe skills for a spin? This dynamic workshop combines the precision of scientific glassblowing with the creative freedom of artistic latheworking. Explore lathe operation and maintenance, experiment with color preparation and application, and discover new ways to manipulate form and material. Perfect for experienced glassworkers ready to refine their skills, troubleshoot challenges, and push creative boundaries!

Patty Clune | “Building a Strong Foundation” | Introductory & Beginning Glassblowing
New to the hot shop? This is your chance to dive in! Build confidence through fun games, hands-on drills, and foundational glassblowing techniques. Work with hot glass to create paperweights, cups, bowls, and plates while learning how the material moves and responds. No experience necessary! Beginners are welcome, and intermediate glassblowers can join to explore the finer points of the process.

Additional studio time: 5–9 PM, Monday–Thursday

Last Friday night, Glass Olympics attendees gathered around the hot shop to watch and his excellent crew of SCC students and faculty assemble this amazing figure! It’s always so cool to watch everyone get into the flow to bring a piece to life. Thank you once again to Danny White for joining us as a resident artist and for designing our merch!

A big thank you to all for joining us here this past weekend for the 2026 Glass Olympics! We were thrilled to welcome students and faculty from Alfred University, Bowling Green State University, Kent State, Ohio State University, Salem Community College (obviously), Tyler School of Art & Architecture, and University of Wisconsin - River Falls!

Students completed in some excellent and super fun events including-

“We Should Talk More” - teams could only communicate via text message while blowing glass
“Got Drip” - wax tower challenge
“GEEX & Freak” - Jeoparty glass trivia
“Glassketball” - hot glass while dribbling a basketball
“Human Rollers” - all hands in flameworking challenge
“Great Balls of Fire” - an epic, three part, glassmaking-putt-putt final round

Congratulations to the home team on their first place finish! The creative energy and community spirit of the students here at SCC never ceases to amaze us! Great work all!

Thank you Amy Lemaire, , for the insightful presentation, “Where our Hands Come From”, a deep dive into the histories our contemporary flameworking landscape can be traced back to.

And thank you Danny White, , for being here as our Fall 2026 Artist-in-Residence, for the awesome new swag and Olympics designs, and for the incredible demonstration on Friday night!

All of us here are saddened by the loss of SCC Distinguished Alumnus Paul J. Stankard, who passed on October 6, following an extended illness. Paul parlayed a successful career in scientific glass technology into an extraordinary second career as a world-renowned glass artist, elevating the glass paperweight from craft to fine art through his detailed botanical designs.

For decades, Paul passionately supported his alma mater. With his wife Pat, he generously funded a scholarship and donated exquisite works of art to the SCC collection. Paul also helped create the SCC Glass Art degree program, founded the International Flameworking Conference, taught workshops, and much more. Always generous with sharing his wisdom, Paul was extremely proud and humbled that the world-class studio in the Samuel and Jean Jones Glass Education Center bears his name. He was also proud to be named the first state-wide Community College Distinguished Alumnus by the New Jersey Council of County Colleges.

Paul’s legacy will live on through the generations he inspired and the countless lives he helped change – at Salem Community College and around the world. As a glass artist, author, educator, philanthropist and a friend to many, he was truly one of a kind.

We are missing our teacher, mentor, supporter, and friend. Yet it is difficult to stay down when remembering a friend who made you smile. Paul brought so much joy, generosity, curiosity, and enthusiasm to the world, and his touch remains.

To the countless individuals whose lives were touched by Paul’s presence, and to all who found inspiration in his work, we extend our deepest condolences. In Paul’s memory, may we smile often, be generous in our support of others, and remain fiercely devoted to the passions that inspire us.

Please keep Paul’s family in your thoughts and prayers.

October is here, and we have two exciting workshop opportunities this month!

Saturday Glassblowing Workshop
Three Saturday Sessions: October 17, 24, 31
9:00 am - 12:00 pm
Ages 18+ | $300 per student
Are you interested in learning the art of glassblowing? Join us this fall for our 3-week Saturday Glassblowing Workshop!
This exciting, hands-on workshop is an awesome introduction to blown glass and will focus on the art of traditional glassmaking at the furnace, where you'll learn how to manipulate molten glass into a variety of solid and hollow forms. Clear and colored glass will be explored. Whether you're completely new to the process or already have some experience, this class will help you build your skills and explore new techniques!
Ages 18 and up are welcome to participate in this workshop. (18 or under, but interested as well? Keep an eye out for our upcoming teen glassblowing workshop in December!)

Saturday Stained Glass Workshop
Three Saturday Sessions: October 17, 24, 31
9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Ages 18+ | $275 per student
Find inspiration in glistening glass! Join us for a multi-week stained glass workshop!
The focus in this course is to learn the basics of stained glass using the copper foil method. Participants will develop skills in pattern design, use of colors, cutting and grinding glass, foiling, soldering, and wrapping the finished pieces in came. We will also discuss tools, solutions, and safety considerations for the home studio.
Beginners welcome! No prior experience is necessary!
Caution: Stained glass has been known to be a gateway to a glass art addiction!
This class meets three consecutive Saturdays - October 17, 24, and 31; 9:00 am - 1:00 pm.

No experience required. Materials for participating in the courses are included.
