Salem Community College Glass Education Center The GEC hosts the annual International Flameworking Conference. Salem Community College's Glass Education Center is home to two glass degree programs.

Salem Community College's Glass Education Center (GEC) offers degree programs in Scientific Glass Technology (only of its kind in US) and Glass Art, and non-credit glass workshops. We offer an associate degree in art and an associate in scientific glass. Our Associate in Applied Science degree is the only in the country for Scientific Glass Technology. The SCC Glass Education Center is also home to the annual International Flameworking Conference.

We are grateful to Senator Cory Booker, , and his team for taking the time to visit us yesterday at SCC’s Glass Education Center. We always appreciate the opportunity to share the work we do here and to highlight the incredible programs, students, faculty, and community that make SCC special!

During his visit, Senator Booker toured the studio and learned more about our Scientific Glass Technology and Glass Art degree programs, our students’ educational and career pathways, as well as our extracurricular events and workshops.

Senator Booker, along with his Senior Constituent Advocate, Ashley Bauer, also took part in a hands-on glassblowing activity with us. And, if you’re wondering - they both did an amazing job in the hot glass studio!

A big thank you to Senator Booker and his entire team for spending time with us, engaging with our students and faculty, and learning more about the exciting work happening here at SCC’s Glass Education Center.

We would also like to thank Salem County Deputy Director Cordy Taylor; County Commissioners Ed Ramsay and Paul Collier; and Salem County Surrogate and former County Commissioner Dr. Mickey Ostrum for joining us, as well as for the county’s ongoing support of our students’ education here at Salem Community College.

Tiny woodland creatures, wands, worlds inside bubbly blown globes, leaves floating gently downstream…all of these are things that ’s flameworking students came up with when asked to make something from a dream for their final project. Everyone did such a great job bringing their ideas to life with the skills they learned this summer!

**REMINDER: Registration is open NOW for 15-Week Fall Glass Classes at SCC's Glass Education Center**

Beginners welcome! Visiting students welcome! No prior experience necessary for these exciting hands-on offerings!

All 15-week glass courses meet once per week, with students having ample access to the studio outside of class meeting times, 6-days per week!

Enrollment information – and SCC’s free (and fast) application – can be found via the links at www.salemcc.edu/glassartclasses. You do not need to be a degree seeking student to enroll in these courses.

Creative Principles of Flameworking
Fridays, 9:00 am - 12:55 pm or Saturdays, 9:00 am - 12:55 pm
Hands-on experiences enable the student to gain the hand skills necessary to create with glass at the torch. Class projects emphasize both the technical and creative elements necessary for creating significant flameworked glass.

Glass Kiln Techniques
Wednesdays, 5:40 - 9:15 pm
Glass Kiln Techniques includes a variety of processes for manipulating glass in a kiln including fusing, slumping, enamel painting, and other techniques for creating imagery. Processes will be introduced through demonstrations performed by the instructor, lectures, handouts, and other support materials. Topics include kiln set-up, types of glass, compatibility, incorporation of non-glass materials, annealing, and finishing.

Glassblowing I
Mondays, 6:00 - 9:00 pm
This studio course provides an introduction to hot glass blowing. Students will be introduced to various methods of working and the knowledge necessary to create both functional and nonfunctional glass objects. Students will learn different ways of manipulating glass forms in both solid and blown states.

Glass Kiln Casting
Tuesdays, 1:00 - 4:20 pm
This hands-on studio course focuses on a variety of glass kiln casting techniques used to create glass sculpture. Techniques covered including rubber mold making, plaster/silica molds, wax working, lost wax casting, and pate de verre. This course focuses on both the technical concerns of the material, as well as the creative and conceptual development of each student.

For their final assignment, 's students had to create a commemorative dish memorializing something special to them. The results are just as unique and varied as their artists, ranging in subject matter from the earth as seen from space to soup. Also included are some other works from around the kiln room in the last days of the summer term. Excellent work everyone!

It’s the last day of the summer term! All of our classes have finished up and critiqued their final projects, so we are all done at the glass education center until the fall semester starts. There was way too much cool work to fit into just one post, so keep an eye out for the recaps of each class’s final projects. Until then, here are some previews.
