Council and Board members of local governments are treated, for many legal purposes, just the same as board members of for-profit companies. But I’m not sure anyone ever was elected to Town Council based on their expertise in reading an audit. Nevertheless, Council members need to recognize that overseeing Town finances is an essential part of their job . I don’t have much sympathy for an elected official who says something like ”We had no idea that our finances were out of control for three years.”
