The honest answer to a question we get a lot.

The hardest part isn't the long shifts or the early mornings or the physical work.

It's that the people you take care of become family..and you have to keep showing up, even on the days you know it's the last week, the last day, the last morning.

Anyone who can't carry that part won't last in this field. Anyone who can will love the work in a way no other job offers.

This Home Health Aide class is just about to complete.

They're already-certified CNAs back at it ➡ this time for their HHA.

With Ms. Roxanne Balbas, as their instructor for the next stretch leading them through the next several weeks of training.

Going back to school as a working adult takes something. Most of these students are juggling shifts, families, and commutes to be here.

True or false: You need a high school diploma to become a CNA in California?

Most people would say true. The actual answer is false.

California state law doesn't require a high school diploma or GED to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.

The state's eligibility rules are about training hours, age, a background check, and passing the state competency exam — 160 hours of approved training in total, with both classroom and clinical components.

The diploma requirement most people are familiar with comes from individual schools, not the state. Many CNA programs across California ask for a high school diploma or GED as part of their own admissions policy, and that's where the rule shows up in most people's experience. But the two aren't the same thing.

It's a small distinction with a big impact for anyone who's been told they can't start a healthcare career because of a missing credential. The honest answer is: it depends on the program, not on the state.
