Did you know today is National Go Fishing Day? This unofficial holiday is the perfect reminder to slow down, drop a line and enjoy the outdoors.

At Kirkwood, students in the Parks and Natural Resources program turn that love of nature into hands-on skills for preserving and managing natural resources. From identifying and managing fish, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and nesting game birds to maintaining lake areas, campgrounds, prairies and park facilities, students get real experience preparing for careers in parks, conservation, environmental education and land management.

Love the outdoors? This program could be a natural fit. Learn more at www.kirkwood.edu/parks.

Today is National Eat Your Vegetables Day!

From tomatoes and onions to peppers, squash, raspberries, and more, the produce growing in Kirkwood’s Sustainability Village garden helps supply our student food pantry with fresh, healthy options throughout the season. 🌱

Powered by dedicated volunteer Kirkwood faculty, staff, and students, the garden is a hands-on example of how our campus community comes together to support students.

Last year alone, the garden supplied more than 1,600 pounds of fresh produce to the student food pantry, helping increase access to healthy food for students across our campuses.

What starts in the garden becomes nutritious meals and support for students — showing how sustainability can make a direct impact in our community.

Growing food, building community, and supporting student success.

Giving back, one project at a time.

Kirkwood employees spent Friday afternoon giving back during the United Way Day of Caring for Johnson & Washington Counties!

Our team volunteered at the North Liberty Community Pantry, lending a hand both outside and inside the facility. We helped clean up the grounds by picking up trash, pulling weeds, and freshening up outdoor spaces. Inside the pantry, volunteers sorted donations, organized inventory, and stocked shelves to help prepare for serving community members in need.

It was a great opportunity to connect with colleagues, support a local organization, and make a meaningful impact in our community. Thank you to the North Liberty Community Pantry and United Way for organizing such a rewarding day of service!

A week of hands-on learning helped one high school student see her future more clearly.

During a 32-hour Workplace Learning Connection internship with Tipton Ambulance Service, West Branch High School senior Larkin Brown explored emergency medical services, completed Stop the Bleed training, earned her Basic Cardiac Life Support certification, and observed patient care in the Emergency Department at University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center Downtown.

One of the highlights of her experience was visiting Kirkwood’s Emergency Medical Services program, where she began to picture herself as a college student and future healthcare professional.

“The experience as a whole helped me figure out what I want to do and helped me start making a plan,” Larkin said.

Through partnerships with local employers and healthcare professionals, students like Larkin gain valuable experiences that help turn career interests into future goals.

Thank you to Brad Ratliff and the Tipton Ambulance Service team for investing in the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Congratulations to Kirkwood Interior Design and Interior Architecture students Clarabel Quijada and Savanna Schieffer, who advanced to the Top 10 in Durkan Hospitality’s DSCVR student design competition.

The national competition, held in partnership with NEWH, The Network of the Hospitality Industry, highlights emerging talent in hospitality design and supports the education of future designers. More than 1,000 college students entered this year’s contest, which is open to active college or university students majoring in a commercial interiors discipline.

Savanna went on to earn second place for her design, The Topography Collection. Her concept draws inspiration from architectural site plans, land contours, and water-like curves to create a refined surface that feels both grounded and dynamic.

Clarabel and Savanna will both be second-year students in the program this fall. Their success is a great example of the creativity, talent, and career-ready learning happening at Kirkwood.

Congratulations, Clarabel and Savanna, on this outstanding achievement!

Kirkwood was proud to welcome nearly 700 FFA members to compete in floriculture, horse judging, nursery landscape, and livestock judging contests. Through our partnership with Iowa FFA, we are helping support students as they develop the knowledge, skills, and leadership that will help shape the future of agriculture.
