As we honor Mental Health Awareness Month, it's a crucial reminder that taking care of our mental well-being is just as vital as attending to our physical health. Therapy can be a transformative tool, offering a supportive space to explore our thoughts and emotions. It's important to recognize that therapy isn't only for times of crisis or when we feel parts of ourselves have been lost. Instead, it can be a proactive step toward maintaining and enhancing our mental health, helping us navigate life's challenges before they become overwhelming. Seeking therapy is a courageous act of self-care and personal growth, empowering us to live more fulfilled and balanced lives. Remember, you don't have to wait for a breaking point to reach out for support; therapy can be a valuable resource at any stage of your journey. šŸ’š

Have you ever thought about why some feelings feel so much bigger? Sometimes our reactions make a lot more sense when we realize it’s not just ā€œadult usā€ responding — it’s also younger parts of us trying to stay safe.

That’s part of why tools like the ā€œinner child wheelā€ can feel so powerful to connect to our feelings in real time + some of those ancient hurts. Research on attachment, nervous system responses, and emotional memory shows that early experiences shape how we interpret stress, connection, rejection, conflict, and care later in life. Our brains are constantly trying to predict safety based on past experiences — especially during emotionally charged moments.

So when a feeling seems bigger than the situation…
when criticism feels devastating…
when being left out feels unbearable…
when conflict makes you shut down, panic, or get defensive…

…it may be worth asking:
ā€œWhat younger feeling just got activated here?ā€

Some gentle processing questions:
✨ What emotion feels the strongest right now?
✨ How old does this feeling feel? (Or how old do I feel right now in this feeling?)
✨ What does this part of me seem afraid of?
✨ What did I need in moments like this growing up?
✨ What would support, reassurance, or safety look like right now?
✨ Am I responding to this moment only — or also to old emotional memories?

The goal isn’t to ā€œget ridā€ of these younger parts, but give them some of the TLC they didn't get when they were initially searching for it. Healing often looks a lot more like learning how to respond to ourselves with compassion, boundaries, regulation, and care instead of shame. (Take care of that inner child!)

You are allowed to learn new ways of relating to yourself — even if your nervous system learned survival first ā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹

Buzzing to be a sponsor for this awesome charity event~! Kesem is a wonderful organization supporting children who have been impacted by a parent's cancer. Our founder, T, has been involved with Kesem since 2019 & it feels wonderfully full circle to get to support them through STG after serving as a Mental Health Professional (MHP) for CK- IU! šŸ›šŸ’™šŸ’ššŸ©µ

Stress isn’t just mental—it’s physical, too

This week, we've been talking A LOT about the stress cycle with folks in session. When something stressful happens, your body activates to help you respond:
alert → mobilize → protect

But many of us don’t get to the final step: coming back down (and closing the loop)

So even after the situation is ā€œover,ā€ your body can still feel on edge.

That’s the stress cycle—and when it doesn’t complete, it can show up as:
• racing thoughts
• irritability
• burnout (or worse: full on being CRISPY)
• feeling stuck or overwhelmed

Ways to help your body complete the stress cycle:

• Move your body: short walks, stretching, or gentle movement can signal that the stress has passed

• Slow your breathing: Longer exhales help your nervous system settle, using your coping and grounding skills

• Connect with someone safe: A conversation, a hug, or even a check-in text can support regulation

• Let emotions move: Crying, Laughing, Singing, *Screaming*

• Engage your senses: Warm showers, music, or a quiet, comfortable/ low sensory space can be really grounding

A gentle reminder:
You don’t have to eliminate stress completely.
Supporting your body in finishing the stress response can make a meaningful difference.
