Last Monday, the 2026 Summer Predoctoral Programs (SPP) Research Symposium celebrated the culmination of an enriching summer of research, learning, and community-building for incoming graduate students.

SPP provides incoming doctoral students with an opportunity to become familiar with the academic, social, and cultural environment of graduate school before beginning their degree programs.

Congratulations to the students whose presentations demonstrated excellence in research, scholarly inquiry, and impact.

🎉Bryce Cousins, Ph.D. candidate in Physics Illinois, has been awarded the 2026 Jump Fellowship, supported by Jump Trading LLC.

Jump Trading is a Chicago‑based trading firm, founded in 1999 by two Illinois alumni, with a focus on algorithmic and high‑frequency trading strategies.

The Jump Fellowship recognizes outstanding doctoral students in the mathematical, computing, and physical sciences whose research demonstrates exceptional originality, rigor, and potential for high impact. The fellowship provides a $50,000 stipend and covers all tuition and fees.

Your research is important and interesting. Come tell us all about it! This annual competition invites grad students from all disciplines to celebrate their work and hone their live presentation skills by giving a compelling research talk to a general audience in just 3 minutes.
