✨ What happens when college students bring kids’ imaginations to life?

Wendy Rogers, professor in the Department of Health and Kinesiology, and Chicago Public School teacher, Abbie Werner, connected their students through a creative classroom collaboration.

Thirty Chicago schoolchildren, including 12 special education students and a fourth-grade general education class, imagined, described and sketch robots they would want in their homes. Students in Rogers’ Health and Kinesiology 400 course, Human-Robot Interaction for Health & Wellness, used the children’s written descriptions to create their own drawings, adding details about each robot’s functions.

Through this project, college students learned about user-centered and participatory design by listening closely to children’s ideas and bringing their visions to life. When the children saw their ideas brought to life, their joy showed the power of making students feel heard and valued.
