Daniel Kraus (MSLIS ’05), alumnus and New York Times bestselling author, won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Fiction for “Angel Down.”

In an interview with the iSchool, Kraus shared his reaction to the award and the vision behind the novel set against the backdrop of World War I.

“The Pulitzer was not something that I had given any thought to, ever,” Kraus said. “It was completely out of the blue.”

Praised by the Pulitzer Prize Board as “a stylistic tour-de-force,” “Angel Down” follows five American soldiers who discover a fallen angel in No Man’s Land. The novel’s ambitious structure, written as a single sentence across 304 pages, was inspired by Kraus’ desire to capture the cyclical nature of war.
