The INHS Herbarium is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois located in the Robert A. We house the Illinois Natural History Survey (ILLS), the University of Illinois Plant Biology (ILL), and the University of Illinois Crop Evolution Lab (CEL) herbaria collections which includes plants, fungi, bryophytes, and algae. In total we hold over 1,000,000 specimens, the second largest in Illinois and one of the 15th largest in the United States. We have one of the most comprehensive records of Illinois vascular plants found anywhere including a large number of threatened and endangered species. Specimen loans are available for qualified researchers.

Can art help us understand our planet’s past? Another Place Storymaking the Entangled Prairie, explores the connection between natural history and artistic expression. By pairing historical artifacts with contemporary works, we’re asking big questions about our place in the ecosystem.

Whether you’re a science buff, an art lover, or just looking for a unique weekend plan, this exhibit at Krannart offers a fresh lens on the world around us.
