A $1 adaptation developed at Notre Dame could save thousands of lives each year.

Earlier today, fans at Notre Dame Stadium Professor Ana Flores-Mireles and her team that have developed a simple silicone-oil coating that keeps bacteria and fungi from sticking to the device entirely.

A $1 adaptation developed at Notre Dame could save thousands of lives each year.

Over 1 million patients get catheter-related infections annually. Instead of using antibiotics, Professor Ana Flores-Mireles and her team developed a simple silicone-oil coating that keeps bacteria and fungi from sticking to the device entirely.

The discovery was inspired in part by Ph.D. candidate Alyssa La Bella ’21, ’26 Ph.D., whose own medical history led the team to target hard-to-treat fungal infections like Candida auris: https://go.nd.edu/PreventingInfections

New students found their place. Classes got underway. The Shamrock Series took us to Green Bay. AC/DC rocked Notre Dame Stadium. Football returned. And the Notre Dame community gathered in prayer at the consecration of campus to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
