Here's Global Studies Fellow Neta Mishly on her upcoming conference presentation:

"Intimate partner violence is one of the most widespread expressions of violence against women. It takes place in all countries, cultures, and societies around the globe. Studies have shown that migrant women's intersectional identity as migrants and women makes them particularly vulnerable to intimate partner violence. In my presentation, I will share information about the unique barriers migrant women face in their attempts to cope with violence in intimate settings and propose some ideas on how destination countries can better protect them."

Chavela Vargas rose to fame during the Golden Age of Mexican cinema as a vocalist and actress. Her masculine persona, which included carrying guns, smoking, drinking tequila, and performing in a poncho, set her apart as she performed solo with only a guitar. She received a Latin Grammy in 2007 from the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Join us Wednesday at 7pm for Las Magnificas in the Moeser Auditorium to see the CORE Ensemble. This event is free and open to the public. You won’t want to miss this performance!

"Global migration is the visible part of the disparity of opportunities that exists between different parts of the world. About half of those who move around the world are children, many of them making dangerous journeys unaccompanied. My wish is that all unaccompanied children and adolescents find in their host countries an integration process that enables them to build authentic and fruitful life projects, offering them safe paths for their peaceful and integral development." - UNC Curriculum in Global Studies Fellow Gabriel Bernardo da Silva on his upcoming spring conference presentation

The UNC Curriculum in Global Studies stands with the people of Turkey and Syria in the wake of two devastating earthquakes on February 6, 2023. The scale of the destruction and the loss of life in these earthquakes have been unprecedented and the humanitarian crisis is ongoing. The death toll exceeds 41,000 and is expected to increase. Exponentially more have been injured. Dozens of countries around the world have sent search and rescue teams to assist their Turkish and Syrian counterparts and the international community has been raising funds to help the survivors. However, the social, political, and economic aftereffects of these earthquakes will continue for much longer. We invite our Global Studies community to stand in solidarity with those affected by the earthquakes and support the recovery efforts.

For those interested in the work of relief organizations and donating to them, here is a list of reputable organizations in the United States, Turkey, and Syria: Bridge to Turkey (began in the Triangle (North Carolina) and works directly with local Turkish organizations engaged in relief efforts for earthquake survivors), Turkish Philanthropy Fund; Ahbap; AKUT; Boğaziçi Üniversitesi Yurtdışı Topluluğu; Syrian-American Medical Society; Oxfam; UNHCR; Action For Humanity; Nuday Syria; Molham; Kahramanmaraş Earthquake Emergency Relief Fund; Unicef; Assyrians without Borders

There’s also a relief campaign for the students of the largest universities of Turkey (Boğaziçi University, Middle East Technical University, Istanbul Technical University, Yıldız Technical University, Ankara University and Hacettepe University) who directly affected by the February 6th earthquakes: https://boyutbogazici.org/en/donation/
