Today, Carolina joins so many around the world in remembering Dolly Parton and the incredible legacy she leaves behind. 🦋✨

A piece of Dolly’s story lives on here in Chapel Hill. The Southern Folklife Collection at Wilson Library holds the master recording of “Puppy Love,” her first single, recorded when she was just 12, along with an early promotional photo. In 2017, Carolina partnered with Yep Roc Records to share that rare recording with a new generation of listeners.

Years later, her connection to Carolina continued through alum Adam Cook, whose work helped bring the Dolly Parton Children’s Hospital to life in East Tennessee earlier this year.

Dolly gave the world so much—through her music, her generosity and her commitment to children and literacy. We’re grateful to preserve a small piece of her remarkable story at Carolina.

You can currently find a piece of that history on display in Wilson Library’s “An Alphabet of Treasures: Special Collections from A to Z” exhibition. Look for Dolly under “L is for Love.” 🩵

A century-old bell and a family legacy: UNC School of Education professor Kristin Papoi is carrying on her grandmother’s passion for teaching, one first day of class at a time. 🩵🔔

In 1921, Papoi’s grandmother, Thelma Papoi, began teaching at age 18 in the small town of Deshler, Ohio. Known as “everyone’s first grade teacher,” she taught for more than 35 years and rang a bell each morning before classes began.

More than a century later, that same bell has found a home at Carolina. Kristin Papoi received it from her parents in 2021 and now rings it at the start of each semester, sharing with future educators a reminder of the legacy, relationships and impact at the heart of teaching.

For Papoi, no FDOC is complete without the ringing of the bell.
