Award Amount: up to $75,000 per year for up to two (2) years

LOI Deadline: March 25, 2020 by 5:00pm ET. Invited full applications due July 29, 2020

Anticipated Award Notification: December 2020

RFP Synopsis:

The Craig H. Neilsen Foundation (CHNF) is accepting Letters of Intent (LOIs) to support research that develops sound data to inform and disseminate best practices that produce better outcome and to improve quality of life for people living with Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI). The PSR portfolio does this by funding the development and dissemination of sound data to inform best practices that produce better outcomes and improve quality of life for people living with SCI. Emphasis is placed on research directed towards:

Increasing understanding of psychological (behavioral, emotional, cognitive) and social (interpersonal, community, environmental) factors that affect health, functioning and quality of life;
Testing the effectiveness and/or feasibility of rehabilitation and habilitation interventions to improve psychological and social functioning, including participation in work, school and other community activities;
Improving measurements of psychological, social and environmental risk factors, protective factors, processes and outcomes; and
Identifying critical service gaps, needed data and/or new areas of exploration, within a psychosocial or socioecological context, as defined by or with input from people living with SCI.
The PSR portfolio areas of emphasis include, but are not limited to, research on aging, caregiving (formal and informal networks), employment/work, health behaviors and fitness, independent living/lifestyle, self-management/selfcare, and technology access. Research can involve qualitative and/or quantitative methodologies. Applications to this portfolio must be research-oriented and psychosocial in their focus. Applicants must have a doctoral degree or an equivalent terminal professional degree (e.g., PhD, MD, DVM). This funding is designed to encourage specialization in the field of SCI. Fellowships are intended to provide mentored training in SCI research to early-career investigators. The Fellowship Applicant (Fellow) should be mentored (or co-mentored) by an investigator experienced in SCI psychosocial research. Fellows must have attained their doctoral degree or an equivalent terminal professional degree by the FGA submission deadline and have held that degree no longer than five years prior to the FGA submission deadline. For Fellows with an MD degree, the five-year period begins after completion of their residency program. The Neilsen Foundation encourages submissions from eligible P*s who represent a wide range of disciplines; however, it is required that relevant SCI expertise is represented on the proposed research project team. A PI may only submit one application in a given portfolio cycle. Multiple P*s from an institution may submit concurrent, independent applications in a given grant cycle. In such cases, each project must be distinct, with non-overlapping Aims. Indirect costs are not allowed for this award.

are you looking for a chance to mentor youth scientists? Check out: Carolina A.D.M.I.R.E.S. (Assisting in Development and Mentoring an Innovative Research Experience in Science)

To all Postdocs in Science / Math disciplines,
I invite you to become a mentor for an 8th and 9th grade STEM outreach program called Carolina ADMIRES. This NSF-funded program targets minorities and women underrepresented in the sciences. It involves a combination of professional development and mentored science literature research. As a mentor, you would be paired with 1-2 students who you would interact with during 3 Saturday morning meetings (dates below), aiding them in developing a research topic. It is a really rewarding experience. Their investigations are typically literature research but can also include experiments they conduct at home – they will not be working in any UNC labs. Their efforts culminate in Presentation Day, where they present a poster alongside current Carolina students with parents & mentors present. See http://admires.unc.edu/ for more information.

It doesn’t take a lot of effort to be a mentor – here is the commitment we ask of mentors:

Attend a 50-min orientation this fall at a mutually convenient time.
Commit to attend all 3 regular Saturday meetings to be held on-campus (location TBD). If there is an emergency we have substitute mentors available, but need to be given as much advance notice as possible. The dates are:

Nov. 16 / Jan. 25 / Feb. 29

Nominal time will be 10am – noon, although we may typically only need you 1 to 1.5 hours within this window and will announce that in advance (we respect your time!)

Plan to do an in-person or online (skype) meeting with your student at a mutually convenient time on or around the following date:
Dec. 14

Commit to attend research presentation day, March 28, 11am-2pm. (very important!)
Stay in regular contact with your mentees between meetings (at least every 2 weeks).
You don’t have to be an expert in their exact interest area, as you all know how to investigate an open-ended problem and evaluate the integrity of scientific information. That said, our cohort of students in past years had interests in the following areas:

Biology, Medicine, & Genomics
Chemistry
Physics & Astronomy / Space Science
Engineering
Environmental Science
Applied Mathematics
Computer Science
Please contact me if you are interested & able to commit to the above requirements, or have questions before signing up. This mentoring opportunity is available to all UNC employees who are active in STEM research and who currently hold a PhD in a STEM discipline (postdocs, research faculty, faculty, or similar). Feel free to pass the word along to other potential mentors.
