Graduate students Kaitlyn Hohmeier and Aaron Jacobson traveled to Washington, D.C., in January as part of the Joint Mathematics Meetings to advocate for sustained federal investment in mathematical sciences!
Alongside 293 mathematical scientists from 47 states, they met with congressional staff and members of Congress to highlight how research funding expands undergraduate opportunities, broadens access to STEM pathways, and strengthens the U.S. STEM workforce.
Representing North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District, they met with staff from Senators Ted Budd and Thom Tillis’ offices and spoke in person with Representative Valerie Foushee. Kaitlyn took time to share with them how her NSF Graduate Research Fellowship has supported her graduate education and research—demonstrating the real impact of federal investment in STEM.
We’re proud to see our students advocating for the future of mathematics and innovation!
