After eight years of compassionate clinical service, Grayson officially hung up her working vest earlier this summer to enjoy a well-earned retirement. A golden retriever and the nation’s first full-time rehabilitative facility dog appointed to a dental school faculty, Grayson was an incredibly beloved, dedicated and impactful addition to UNC Adams School of Dentistry.

Last Wednesday, the Adams School of Dentistry community participated in its annual day of service, DEAH DAY. Each year, ASOD holds DEAH DAY to honor the lives of Deah Barakat (DDS 2017), Yusor Abu-Salha (DDS 2019), and Razan Abu-Salha through community-wide acts of service.

This year, 26 sites were served by over 400 volunteers 🩵 🦷 ✨️ Students, staff and faculty spent their day participating in community service at sites such as Jordan Lake, Carolina Community Garden, APS of Durham, the Boys and Girls Club, Meals on Wheels, NC Diaper Bank, community dental clinics across the state, clean-up in ASOD labs and clinics and so much more.

Thank you to our student organizers for yet another successful DEAH DAY, and to our student, staff and faculty volunteers for honoring the lives of Deah, Yusor and Razan and passionately serving our people and community.

Former Carolina men’s basketball coach Roy Williams joined ASOD’s Dean Janet Guthmiller, DDS, PhD, and the deans from the UNC School of Medicine and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy — Samantha Meltzer-Brody, MD, MPH, and Kim Brouwer, PharmD, PhD, — at an event in western North Carolina.

The group discussed the benefits of interprofessional education and how collaborations between dentistry, medicine and pharmacy helps serve people in North Carolina. Dean Guthmiller talked about how working together across the health sciences creates more opportunities and benefits for patients, while creating a better working environment for providers and improving patient outcomes through collaboration.

Working with our Mountain Area Health Education Center (MAHEC) partners William Hathaway, MD, FACC, and Katherine Jowers, DDS, DDS, students experience working across disciplines at clinics like the MAHEC OB/GYN clinic. The dentistry learners work with the OB/GYN residents to explore the effects of oral health, systemic conditions and pregnancy outcomes. While our students learn more about systemic prenatal factors, the medical residents get the benefits of insights into oral healthcare at the same time.

This month, panels from the AIDS Memorial Quilt are on display in the atrium of the UNC Adams School of Dentistry.

Each panel is 6 feet by 3 feet and represents one person lost to HIV/AIDS. Together, the Quilt's roughly 50,000 panels make up the largest piece of community folk art in the world.

DDS '27 student, Brian Kelly, was instrumental in bringing the exhibit to ASOD. On Sept. 3, Dr. Lewis Lampiris delivered a keynote on the history of the epidemic, the lessons learned and the evolving role of health professionals in HIV care.

Please join us in congratulating Karen Louizes, foundation accountant at the Adams School of Dentistry, on receiving a H.E.A.R.T. Award!

Karen has spent the past two years supporting the Dental Foundation of North Carolina, managing budgets and distributing funds. As someone who works largely in the background, she says the recognition means a great deal: "As an accountant, I work behind the scenes, so sometimes I feel like the things I do aren't as noticeable. This reassurance is really great and makes me want to work harder."

Meet Ernest Johnson, a first-year DDS student at UNC Adams School of Dentistry. Johnson credits a childhood dentist's promise to fix his teeth with shaping his path into the field. Before starting the DDS program this fall, he studied nutrition at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, minored in music and chemistry, and researched bone-growth drugs in the Miguez Lab. UNC Adams School of Dentistry alumni Dr. Michael Kretchmer (DDS, MS '02) and Dr. Michael Stella (DDS, MS '06) have endowed a fellowship to support periodontal residents. The gift, made through their practice, Tar Heel Periodontics and Implant Dentistry, is rooted in their own experiences as residents and wanting to give back to the community they've been a part of for decades.

Meet Dr. Taylor Spruill, a recent General Practice Residency graduate from our Advanced Dental Education program — she shares what a typical day at ASOD looked like for her.

The UNC Adams School of Dentistry GPR Program is a 12-month program (with an optional second year) with the goal to create a supportive environment that helps residents grow into the dental leaders they aim to be. Graduates go on to private general dentistry, advanced specialty training, lead hospital and community dental programs, serve in military and VA medical centers, hold federal administrative roles, take full- or part-time academic positions, and more.
