Volkmar and Margret Sander Prize 2023 Award to Christiane Lemke
Last Friday, November 10, Deutsches Haus at NYU awarded the 10th annual Volkmar and Margret Sander Prize to Dr. Christiane Lemke, Professor Emerita of Political Science and International Relations and the former Director of the Jean Monnet European Center of Excellence at Leibniz University Hannover in Germany. Dr. Angelika von Wahl held the laudatory speech in honor of Christiane Lemke and the evening was closed out by a performance by the singer and songwriter Uta Habbig. Big congratulations to Christiane Lemke, and a heartfelt thank you also to Angelika von Wahl, the Friends of Volkmar and Margret Sander (especially Joan Reutershan), Uta Habbig, and last but not least to Margret Sander who generously created this wonderful prize!

The prize honors individuals who have enriched the cultural, political, and academic relationship between the German-speaking world and the United States. The prize was established by Professor Margret Sander in memory of her late husband, Professor Volkmar Sander, former head of the German Department of NYU and founder and first director of Deutsches Haus at NYU, who passed away in 2011. The prize was awarded for the first time in 2013 to the late Fritz Stern and, in the following year to Gary Smith, to Lya Friedrich Pfeifer in 2015, to Claus Leggewie in 2016, to Karsten Voigt in 2017, to Henry Jarecki in 2018, to Susan Neiman in 2019, to Heinz Ickstadt in 2021, and to Sabine von Mering in 2022.

Political Scientists work on much more than polls and elections!

UNC Political Science congratulates Timothy Ryan and Marc Hetherington for their latest publication in Science Advances! The article, “Counter-stereotypical messaging and partisan cues: Moving the needle on vaccines in a polarized United States,” is coauthored with an interdisciplinary team that includes this dynamic duo. The research examines what messages persuade people to get vaccinated against Covid. Their study found that a pro-vaccine appeal from Donald Trump enticed approximately 104,000 people to get their first Covid shots—at the remarkably low cost of about $1 per person.

You can read the full article at Science Advances. Congratulations, Tim and Marc! Department of Political Science at UNC-Chapel Hill,

A nationwide field experiment shows how to reduce COVID vaccine hesitancy using political messengers.

Congratulations to Kaneesha Johnson, who defended her dissertation entitled "The Punishing State: Punishment, Social Control, and Social Services in North Carolina" this morning at Harvard University to the enthusiastic reception of her PhD committee Stephen Ansolabehere (Chair), Claudine Gay, and Frank Baumgartner, and to various attendees via zoom. The committee noted that the dissertation sets a new standard in the study of state sanctions of marginalized individuals and the historical development of these institutions over more than two centuries. Kaneesha was able to celebrate with lunch with several UNC staff and faculty members, and will be joining us as a Post Doctoral Fellow beginning on July 1, 2023.
