Native Peoples, Native Plants Symposium celebrates cultural relationships among Native peoples and native plants of this area. The symposium is in collaboration with Triangle Native American Society, North Carolina Botanical Garden, The Nature Conservancy, and Sarah P. Duke Gardens.

We learned so much from our speakers and enjoyed the engaging presentations. We even toured NCBG and then bussed everyone over to the AIC for a tour of the AICG. Visit us the next time you’re in town. 

It was so special to have the space to explore these topics and share these experiences with our community.

Dr. Joseph (Joey) Bell graduated from the UNC School of Medicine in 1986 as the first Lumbee pediatrician and the first American Indian pediatrician in North Carolina. Dr. Joey Bell committed years of service to the Native communities within North Carolina. Dr. Bell’s brothers, Dr. Ronny Bell and the Honorable Greg Bell, established this scholarship in honor of his groundbreaking career and commitment to the health of Native children. This scholarship seeks to support those who intend to work with Native communities in any specialty.  

Eligible Applicants: 

UNC medical students who intend to work with Native communities should submit the following to be considered: 

* Curriculum vitae 
* Personal statement/letter of interest outlining your desire to work with American Indians and Native communities 
* Letter of recommendation from a faculty member 
* Letter of recommendation from a provider in a Native community or a provider who works with Native communities.
