Greetings!

There will be an Underling meeting TODAY at 5:30pm in Dey 304. Eli Hornstein and Chunmeng "Bonnie" Wang will be giving a presentation on writing system typology and study methods, the impact of having written forms for a language and some of the complications of borrowing between languages with different writing systems, and in particular how Chinese represents phonological borrowings. They'll also lead an activity so that we can try writing in different systems.

We will also present potential mug designs for discussion and vote, and reveal who the Underling-invited speaker will be at this year's Spring Colloquium.

Looking forward to seeing you all then,

Anna Pincus

Hello Underlinguists!

Our next meeting will be this Monday at 5:30pm in Dey 304. Graduate student, Caleb Hicks, will be giving a presentation on the phenomenon of whistle speech. It should be an interesting lecture for students of all levels.

Hello Underlinguists!

Thank you to everyone who responded to the meeting time poll! The new meeting time for Underling is Monday at 5:30pm. We will continue to meet in Dey 304 on a bi-weekly basis. Since this upcoming Monday is a holiday, we will be meeting the Monday after, on the 28th. More details on our first meeting of the semester are forthcoming.

Another exciting announcement is the finalization of the date for the Linguistics Spring Colloquium, which will be held Saturday, April 13th. We will talk more about the Colloquium at our next meeting.

Hello Underlinguists,

I hope that your fall semester has ended favorably and that the winter holidays prove relaxing and enjoyable. I, and the other Underling executives, would like to offer a preview of what will be in store for Underling next semester. First, we will be sending out a Doodle poll in the next couple weeks to determine the meeting time for next semester. Please try to respond as we hope to have a meeting time that enables all people who'd like to attend to be able to do so.

Along with a potentially new meeting time, other plans for next semester include a dinner between members of Underling and Linguistics faculty, selecting a speaker to invite to the Spring Colloquium, faculty research presentations, and the designing of a linguistics-related mug, available for purchase to all interested members of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill linguistics community.

On that note, Eli, Emmett, and I would like to encourage anyone who is interested in creating a design for the mug to do so. We will be taking a group vote on all proposed mug designs in the first half of the coming semester. In addition, we would like to remind all members that if you have any specific events or discussions that you'd like Underling to host, please let myself or one of the other executives know.

Wishing you a cozy winter and looking forwarding to seeing you all next semester,

Anna

Hello Underlinguists!

Our next meeting will be held today, November 28th at 6:30pm in Dey 304. We will be enjoying the hour-long documentary, The Linguists. It follows the linguists, Greg Anderson and David Harrison, as they document endangered languages. Its reception, as described by Wikipedia, has included its description as: "the talk of the town at Sundance;" "a fascinating journey;" "funny, enlightening and ultimately uplifting;" "a hoot;" and “shaggy and bittersweet.” "While it received some minor criticism for choppy, confusing editing, the subject matter has been called "fascinating" and "compelling," and the spirit of the film's protagonists has been compared to Indiana Jones."

So come to Dey 304, tonight, for a choppy and compelling, and shaggy and uplifting time.

Until then,

Anna Pincus

Hello Underlinguists.

Our next meeting will be today, November 14th at the atypical time of 6:00pm in Dey 304. We will be enjoying a presentation by Eli Hornstein on the topic of 'a squib on the intersections of evolution with language and potential methods for more systematic integration of linguistics and evolution.' Following the presentation, questions may be asked and answered.

Until then,

Anna Pincus

Hello Underlinguists!

Our next meeting will be held tomorrow, October 23rd at 6:30pm in Dey 304. We will be making syntax tree mobiles from bamboo, string, and paper. If you have any materials you'd like to incorporate into your mobile, please feel welcome to bring them. In particular, please bring a writing instrument for your own use.

Additionally, we will briefly discuss a new departmental course offering for the Spring. Lastly, I have been asked to forward information on Spectrogram Brunchs to the members of Underling and will be doing so momentarily.

Until then,

Anna Pincus
