Global Gap Year at UNC-Chapel Hill GGYF at UNC-Chapel Hill is the first college-sponsored gap year program that allows students to design their own gap year experience volunteering abroad.

Applications for the Global Bridge Year Fellowship are now open! 🌍✈️ The sister program of the Global Gap Year Fellowship, the GBYF is awarded to 2 UNC sophomores a year. The fellowship is an opportunity for them to take a year off from UNC to have a global impact through a self-designed year of service around the world. The fellowship is funded and fellows are supported in each step of the process. Apply via the link in the bio or on our website globalgap.unc.edu. Applications are due October 25th at 11:59 PM. 
Join us Wednesday, September 30th for our in-person and online info session at 5pm in the Campus Y second floor classroom. Learn about the program, meet former fellows, and ask all your questions. Pop into our application office hours on October 8th from 4:00 to 5:00 in the Campus Y second floor classroom.

What were our GGYF and Bridge Year gappers up to this past year? Swipe to find out!

Oscar worked on an olive farm in Sicily, volunteered at the American Corner community center in Tunis, Tunisia, and taught and built a library in Nepal!

Syd worked in education in Costa Rica and at a wildlife rescue center in Indonesia!

Nathan taught in Hanoi, Vietnam, worked with youth in Australia, and did conservation work in Portugal!

Logan did environmental conservation work in Ecuador and Thailand!

Allyson got a teaching certification in Guatemala, and taught and built a library in Nepal! What will you do on your gap year?

Check out some photos from our re-entry retreat at the Duke Marine Lab in Morehead City, NC! Coming back from a gap year is a time of immense change and growth. Our re-entry retreat is a space for returned gappers to reflect on their experiences at home and away, have fellowship with students with similar experiences, and set goals for life post-gap year. We also had fun hanging out the beach, on a boat tour of the area, and bonding with our friends in the Morehead-Cain and Duke Gap Year Program programs. Welcome to Carolina, Gappers!

Allyson is a Bridge Year fellow from Naples, Florida. She completed her sophomore year at UNC where she studies Public Policy and Geography. Allyson is involved with Carolina Public Humanities and the Daily Tar Heel. Allyson is passionate about education equity, a passion she has gotten to explore as a teacher in Nepal for the past four months! Our current gapper Oscar will be doing an Instagram takeover tomorrow, Saturday 11/15! Oscar is from Burnsville, NC where he played varsity soccer and tennis and was involved in a variety of service projects. He has also worked as a carpenter’s apprentice at a small eco-focused woodworking company helping to rebuild and renovate homes destroyed by Hurricane Helen in 2024. Oscar will be giving us a glimpse into his life in Sicily!
