The Department of Romance Studies provides a variety of academic opportunities to students at UNC-CH

The Department of Romance Studies offers students the opportunity to study a variety of languages and the history and cultural achievements of the people who speak them. Our department encompasses a variety of disciplines and topics. Students can study the basics of how to speak a language or the linguistic structure and nuances of these languages. They can get a broad overview of contemporary and

historical cultures that speak/spoke these languages, or they can dig deep into the literature, drama, and cinema produced by these cultures. In addition to excellence in the classroom, we strive to bring a variety of renowned scholars and artists from around the world, to engage the students and the broader community. We also organize a variety of film festivals, conferences, and celebrations that span the broad cultural and academic diversity that is "Romance Studies."

The Department of Romance Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is currently seeking applications for two Teaching Assistant Professors of Spanish. The successful candidates will be responsible for teaching a 3-3 course load and participating in departmental service.

The course load will include Spanish language courses as well as courses in other areas of the Spanish curriculum such as: Spanish for heritage learners, Spanish translation and interpretation, and/or Spanish for the professions.

Ph.D. in Spanish, Romance Studies, or related degree required by the time of employment. Native or near-native proficiency in both Spanish and English also required.

A record of teaching excellence at the university level for at least one year is preferred.

This Spring 2026, students in SPAN 417: Languages of the Americas II – Quechua Language and Culture turned learning into action through cultural events, collaboration, and community engagement.

As part of the course, students organized two special events and shared with the UNC community what they had learned throughout the semester. Our first event, SIGUE EXISTIENDO, highlighted the vitality and continued presence of Quechua culture today. Our second event, Celebrating Santiago: EL RICO TAYTA SHANTI, explored Andean cultural traditions.

Through these projects, students strengthened teamwork and collaboration skills while gaining a deeper understanding of a language and culture that remains vibrant and alive.

Spring 2026 was a great season for the ROMS Colloquium!

We brought together students from the different areas of ROMS for engaging conversations, and we had the opportunity to hear the exciting ideas our graduate student community is working on.

We are grateful for the welcoming environment we shared, as well as for the thoughtful questions and meaningful discussions that emerged throughout the Colloquium. A big thank you to all our speakers for sharing their time and expertise, and to everyone who attended and contributed to the vibrant exchange of ideas.

We look forward to seeing you again in Fall 2027—stay tuned and keep joining us!

We are ONE WEEK AWAY from kicking off this semester’s edition of the ROMS Film Festival!
We are excited to welcome students and the broader community to this Spring 2026 program, centered on the theme of dystopia. The selected films offer rich opportunities for engaging discussions across disciplines and cultural contexts, and we hope they will resonate in and beyond the classroom.

Our Fall 2025 ROMS Colloquium was a success! After our opening session, we spotlighted our Hispanic Linguistics PhD students and wrapped the semester with an inspiring ROMS Teaching Roundtable.

The energy, ideas, and conversations in the room made us proud of the incredible work our students and faculty are doing across research, pedagogy, and community. Thank you to everyone who attended, presented, and contributed!
