Today, we want to highlight one of the people who truly brings the School of Government’s mission to life. After more than 30 years of service to the UNC School of Government, Professor John Rubin is retiring. He leaves an extraordinary legacy as a revered teacher, trusted advisor, renowned author, and mentor. As the first faculty member to work on public defense in North Carolina, John created the Public Defense Education program.

The program has reached thousands of defenders through an annual curriculum of law courses, a library of reference materials, and case consultations.

As we celebrate John’s retirement, we invite you to help us sustain programs like Public Defense Education for years to come.

Go to GiveUNC, search for School of Government, and select Public Defense Education Fund (050548)

It’s lunchtime and we have a challenge! ⏰
The current and past members of the School of Government Foundation Board will give $10,000 to the School of Government if 20 donors make a gift to any SOG designation between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.
That means your gift during this two-hour window helps unlock additional support for public service across North Carolina.
Every gift counts. Help us meet the challenge!

Well over a year after Hurricane Helene struck western North Carolina, many communities remain deeply engaged in recovery. While the emergency phase has passed, local governments continue to navigate long-term financial, administrative, and infrastructure challenges left by the storm. Officials are balancing day-to-day service delivery with complex grant management, rebuilding efforts, and compliance requirements that will continue for years. In response, and together with statewide partners, the School of Government supported local governments through training, practical guidance, office hours, and an evolving set of recovery resources tailored to long-term recovery needs.

Now, the School of Government is proud to announce the launch of the NC Local Government Disaster Recovery Portal, a one-stop, centralized resource to help local governments impacted by Hurricane Helene access disaster-recovery funding, training, and practical guidance. This website brings together current funding opportunities, tools, and recovery resources in a single, reliable platform to support communities affected by natural disasters.

The portal was made possible through a joint effort of many regional partners. Learn more about it and explore:
