University of North Carolina Department of Emergency Medicine

University of North Carolina Department of Emergency Medicine The UNC EM Residency was founded in 1995 by Dr. Judith Tintinalli, our Residency Program consists of a 3 year, RRC accredited Emergency Medicine program.

Our mission is to provide outstanding emergency care through excellence in clinical care, education, and research, in an environment of inclusion for persons from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and abilities. We have 12 residents per year who staff the 70,000 patient-per-year and level 1 trauma center UNC Hospital Emergency Department in Chapel Hill. Our residents also spend 30% of their clinical

time at WakeMed in Raleigh, NC, which sees over 75,000 adults and 45,000 pediatric patients yearly, the highest volume emergency department in the Chapel Hill-Durham-Raleigh region. We are innovators in the use of medical simulation, ultrasound, international health, and pediatric training, and we emphasize experience in both community and academic settings to optimally prepare each graduate for leadership in whichever career in Emergency Medicine they chose to pursue. We aim to train the next generation of Emergency Medicine leaders. Headed by Program Director Dr. Nikki Binz; co-led by Associate/Assistant Program Directors Drs. Gary Burke, Maglin Halsey-Nichols, Collyn Murray, Graham Snyder, and Craig Frater. Our Residency Coordinators, Felicia Sawyer and Wynne Sheen, are the best anywhere and ensure that things always run smoothly! We currently have fellowships in EMS, directed by Joey Grover; Pediatrics, directed by Dr. Scott Connely; Global Health fellowship directed by Dr. Justin Myers; Geriatrics directed by Dr. Kevin Biese; Education directed by Dr. Nikki Binz; Administration directed by Dr. Abhi Mehrotra; Ultrasound, directed by Dr Danny Migliaccio; Research, directed by Michelle Meyer.

Congratulations to UNC School of Medicine student, Andrew Harmody, who matched with the UNC Emergency Medicine Residency Program! Andrew’s father, Dr. Matt Harmody, is an alum of the UNC Emergency Medicine program’s class of 2000, the third-ever emergency medicine class trained at UNC Hospitals. Last Friday, they celebrated Match Day together as part of the festivities in Roper Hall.

Joel Glotfelty, MD, a class of 2025 Emergency Medicine Resident at the UNC School of Medicine, made the holidays brighter for local, struggling families.

He helped coordinate donation from 83 members of the emergency department to provide families in need with gas cards, holiday gifts, and stockings, as well as a community meal by partnering with Carrboro-based “TABLE NC.”
