📚Join us for a virtual book launch on Tuesday January 18, 7PM ET - "Precarious Asia: Global Capitalism & Work in , & " by UNC Professor Arne Kalleberg, UNC Professor Emeritus Kevin Hewison & Professor Kwang-Yeong Shin of Chung-Ang University in Seoul, Republic of Korea! 📚

Precarious Asia assesses the role of global and domestic factors in shaping precarious work and its outcomes in Japan, South Korea, and Indonesia as they represent a range of Asian political democracies and capitalist economies: Japan and South Korea are now developed and mature economies, while Indonesia remains a lower-middle income country.

These three authors will be joined by Dr. Jenny Wai-Ling Chan (The Hong Kong Polytechnic University) as a respondent to raise questions about the book, how it fits into the current state of social science, and why this is important for Asian Studies more broadly.

The Carolina Asia Center's Foreign Language & Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship applications are due on May 25. This fellowship supports students taking less-commonly taught language and area studies coursework. This program provides both academic year and summer fellowships to graduate and undergraduate students at the intermediate level and above. The Carolina Asia Center’s priority languages for FLAS include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Urdu, and Arabic and Persian with an Asia career/research focus in South, Southeast, or East Asia. We also consider other Asian languages not taught at UNC for summer fellowships.
The goals of the program include:

1. To assist in the development of knowledge, resources, and trained personnel for modern foreign language and area/international studies;
2. To stimulate the attainment of foreign language acquisition and fluency; and
3. To develop a pool of international experts to meet national needs.

FLAS Fellowships are possible because of grants provided from the U.S. Department of Education to the UNC area and global studies centers. If you have further questions, please contact [email protected]. Apply here: https://carolinaasiacenter.unc.edu/scholarships/flas.
