today is a very important and memorable day for me. the picture on the left was taken July 11th, 2014, when I attended my first ever new student orientation for the College of Charleston. little eighteen year old me had no idea what a wild, bumpy, and incredible seven-year journey i was about to dive into, as i have been through countless trials, tribulations, and sticky situations since the very moment of that first image. fast forward, seven years later, and one will see that i have taken my wisdom and knowledge gained from my struggles to create the human standing in the image on the right (taken today). my college journey was nothing less than a struggle, but through patience and kindness, I’ve finally made it to the next level. today was my official orientation for my student teaching clinical internship which i begin tomorrow and complete in just a few short months. as of this coming December, I will be a fully certified and licensed educator, which has been my passion and sense of motivation for so many years leading up to this moment. although i am overwhelmed with emotions as i officially enter the classroom tomorrow, i am confident enough within my internal being that i have what it takes to make a change for the future and create a new idea of education and personal growth for upcoming generations. i’ve worked so hard for this for so long, it’s incredible to feel the accomplishment of making it to this milestone in my life. through it all, i’ve been lucky enough to have the best motivator i could ever ask for, as has spent six years pushing me to explore the strength and abilities i now know i have. my entire life is about to change, and i feel just the right amount of excitement and nervousness. i can’t wait to see what happens next...🤓✌🏻

Jasmine Saab is our of the week! The Department of Education is so proud to see Jasmine enjoying the beginning of her teaching career and giving back to the local community! As a student here at the College, Jasmine was student director of Project Playground, former Communications Chair in Teaching Fellows, a distinguished Teacher Leader, and actively involved in Greek life on campus. She now teaches at Marrington Elementary School in Goose Creek, SC.
We asked Jasmine about her teaching so far and here's what she had to say:
I would say one thing that I really learned as a teacher is to go with the flow. There are so many things in this profession that you cannot control. For me this was very frustrating. I couldn't help that I had 31 kids this year. I couldn't help the fact that some kids are below grade level. I just have to do my best and go with the flow and understand that loving them is enough. Change the things you can and don't spend time worrying about the things you can't. It's a hard lesson to put into action but it is definitely beneficial as a teacher to just go with the flow.
I think CofC did a great job preparing me for what the teaching profession is. I feel comfortable advocating for my students because I understand theories regarding education. I really enjoyed getting to personally know my professors and being able to call them up to ask them a question about a certain way to teach a lesson. CofCdid a great job preparing me to get a job in the teaching profession.
I love teaching because everyday is different. I have been blessed with such an amazing class. I have already been so impressed with them so far. I had the music teacher tell me that my class was the best class during an assembly and I just started to cry because I was so proud. I had a parent tell me that her son finally comes home excited about school and can't stop talking about school, and this is so unlike how he was at his old school. It's positive memories like these that I truly love about teaching because it is truly amazing to think about how I am being such an impact to someone else.

Meet our first !
Autumn Jenkins is a junior early childhood education major. She is involved with: a local elementary school's after school program, Charleston 40, Greek life and she studied abroad this past summer in India to teach tribal children of all ages, and of course, she is a full time TeacherEd student!
We asked Autumn to finish our new hashtag and here's what she had to say: I want to pursue a job with a purpose. I want to go into the Peace Corps after I graduate to teach over seas to make a difference in the young lives that are in other parts of the world. Some kids just need someone that encourages them daily and believes in them, and through my training at CofC to become an early childhood educator, I can be that person!
