The International Studies (IS) program is both an interdisciplinary and a multidisciplinary program.

The International Studies program at the College of Charleston emphasizes knowledge of regions across disciplines and time, providing students with the skills needed to become global citizens. To give the program strength and competitiveness, it draws from several disciplines; this gives students a multidimensional perspective to global development and issues. The IS major recognizes that a comprehensive focus on international issues, foreign cultures, and societies is beyond the ability of any one discipline to provide. It emphasizes knowledge of regions across disciplines and time. Students of the IS minor (INST) will become acquainted with the international community.

INTL Open House Recap!

Today, the Department of International Studies welcomed students, faculty, and friends to 9 Glebe Street for an afternoon of community and connection!

Students had the opportunity to learn more about the exciting courses being offered in Spring 2027, explore academic opportunities, and connect with fellow students and faculty while enjoying delicious refreshments featuring local produce from Lowcountry Street Grocery.

We’d like to give a huge thank you to Tara Erica Moore in joining us September 14 for a screening of her award-winning documentary “Legacy: Apartheid’s Shadow” and constructive dialogue about its aftermath in a now democratic setting. The duality of transitioning from an institutionalized system and social norms, to one aiming towards unity and equality is a hard concept to capture and convey to a larger audience. The International Studies Department invites you to join us for the Fifth Annual Círculo Hispanoamericano de Charleston Keynote Lecture featuring Dr. Jorell Meléndez-Badillo, Associate Professor of Latin American and Caribbean History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Dr. Meléndez-Badillo will explore the contested history of Puerto Rico, the politics of forgetting, and how artists and cultural producers are challenging these narratives, through Bad Bunny’s DeBÍ TiRAR MáS FOToS as a case study.

Join us on September 14th for a screening of “Legacy: Apartheid’s Shadow” followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Tara Moore! The screening will start at 5 pm in the School for Natural and Environmental Sciences, room 129. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see this award-winning documentary that explores systemic racism and reveals how inequity persists across generations, long after the laws that enforced it are gone.
