International Studies at CofC

International Studies at CofC The International Studies (IS) program is both an interdisciplinary and a multidisciplinary program.

The International Studies program at the College of Charleston emphasizes knowledge of regions across disciplines and time, providing students with the skills needed to become global citizens. To give the program strength and competitiveness, it draws from several disciplines; this gives students a multidimensional perspective to global development and issues. The IS major recognizes that a compre

hensive focus on international issues, foreign cultures, and societies is beyond the ability of any one discipline to provide. It emphasizes knowledge of regions across disciplines and time. Students of the IS minor (INST) will become acquainted with the international community.

INTL 290: Women and Globalization is perfect for anyone interested in global issues, social justice, and gender studies. This course explores how globalization shapes, and is shaped by, gender, class and race, centering around the experiences of women and female-identifying people around the world.

What you’ll do:
⚪️Readings, documentaries and podcasts
⚪️Creative work
⚪️Discuss topics including migration, conflict, economic change, climate impact
⚪️Engage in ideas of patriarchy, resistance, and transnational feminism.

Final project is your choice: research paper or creative project

Yesterday at the 2026 EXPO, our International Studies student, Ella Parker, presented her research project developed in INTL200: Issues and Approaches in International Studies.

Her work, “Cocoa Farming During the Climate Crisis: Perspectives from Ghanaian Farmers and Potential Adaptation Strategies,” highlights the intersection of global agriculture, sustainability, and real-world experience.
