The Department of German and Russian Studies at the College of Charleston is the youngest department in the School of Languages, Cultures, and World Affairs and provides students with opportunities to study the language, literature, cinema and culture of German-speaking Europe and Russia. America has many long-established social and cultural ties with the nations of the German-speaking world: Aust
ria, Germany, and Switzerland. Today, a knowledge of German has become important for anyone engaged in international commerce, research and technology. The Russian Studies program offers a multidisciplinary course of study, which combines the Russian language with courses related to Russian civilization, culture, history, politics and economic. A primarymajor goal is to provide an understanding of the relationship between the United States and Russia in the aftermath of the Cold War. The Department offers a Minor in Russian Studies. Both German and Russian programs offer a full range of extra-curricular activities
in which students and faculty participate.
