🇵🇦 Spend spring break exploring Panama’s vibrant cities while gaining insight into one of the world’s most important trade and logistics hubs. Learn how the Panama Canal connects the global economy, visit startups and international companies and see how entrepreneurship, sustainability and ESG shape modern business. We’re excited to spotlight Kelli Lyons ’98 MBA, Head of Life Company Strategic Ex*****on at USAA and a founding member of the External Advisory Board for the Center for Leadership Science at UNC Charlotte. Kelli will serve as the inaugural chair of the board as well.

Kelli Lyons is Assistant Vice President and Head of the Life Company PMO at USAA, where she leads an integrated strategic ex*****on organization encompassing process engineering, program and portfolio management, change management, and integrated planning. In this role, she is focused on strengthening the connection between strategy and ex*****on, aligning Life Company priorities to USAA's broader strategic goals, and helping the organization deliver measurable business and member outcomes.

Lyons brings more than 25 years of leadership experience across financial services and consulting, with a career focused on strategy, operations, organizational transformation, and enterprise ex*****on. She has held senior leadership roles at Bank of America and TIAA, leading complex transformation efforts, major strategic portfolios, and initiatives focused on growth, operational effectiveness, and customer experience. She most recently served as Chief Strategy Officer at WorkWell Consulting Group, helping shape enterprise strategy and strengthen the operating capabilities required to support the firm's growth.

A longtime advocate for leadership development and organizational effectiveness, Lyons serves as Chair of the Board for the UNC Charlotte Center for Leadership Science. Her involvement with the Center reflects a longstanding interest in how effective leadership, organizational environments, and disciplined ex*****on combine to drive stronger outcomes for both people and organizations.

Lyons earned her MBA in Finance from UNC Charlotte's Belk College of Business and her bachelor's degree in Industrial and Labor Relations from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has also completed the Chief Operating Officer Program at MIT and is a Six Sigma Black Belt.

Belk College economists Glenn Dutcher and Krista Saral are uncovering a challenge many Charlotte employers face without realizing it. Their new research, published in The Economic Journal, suggests that assumptions about where teammates work can shape how much effort employees put into their teams, even when remote and office workers produce similar individual output.

For Charlotte leaders managing mixed‑location teams, the findings raise a practical question about how employees form expectations of their teammates’ contributions. Clearer goals, better feedback and more visibility into team progress may help address inaccurate assumptions, offering a starting point for employers exploring smarter hybrid approaches.

The city truly is our classroom.

This past semester, 13 JL Price MBA students learned directly from Charlotte Douglas International Airport - CLT leaders across operations, emergency management, finance, facilities, customer experience, government affairs and legal. The course was shaped through the leadership of UNC Charlotte faculty members Janaki Gooty, LaShana Wiggs and Tara Cavalline.

It culminated in a three‑hour crisis simulation inside the Airport Emergency Operations Center. Students worked across Operations, Finance and Administration and Policy teams to manage a fast‑moving scenario involving winter weather, a gas‑line issue, overcrowding, media attention and passenger communication.

This is what the JL Price MBA in Charlotte makes possible. Real access to complex leadership experience in one of the country’s fastest‑growing regions.
