A major moment for Charlotte, the W.S. Lee College of Engineering and our regional partners: we have been recognized through the National Science Foundation Regional Innovation Engines program.

Through the Carolinas Grid Engine, we will drive economic competitiveness, accelerate innovation and build the workforce needed for our evolving energy demands.

Today is a big day for UNC Charlotte and the Carolinas! 🎉

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has selected the NSF Grid Modernization Engine in the Carolinas, led by UNC Charlotte, as one of the nation's newest NSF Regional Innovation Engines.

With the potential for up to $160 million over the next decade, the engine will bring together more than 100 partners from North and South Carolina to strengthen our electric grid and create new job and research opportunities across the region. ➡️ bit.ly/CLT-CGE26

UNC Charlotte is developing an ultrasound-based placenta monitoring technology to help assess baby health before birth. 👶

Farah Deeba, assistant professor of engineering and PI with a grant of up to $8.4M, will improve placental health assessment and protect babies from oxygen deprivation. UNC Charlotte is anchoring this initiative — supported by the competitive Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) ) "Making Obstetrics Care Smart" program — alongside University of British Columbia , Sonus Microsystems , Atrium Health and Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) .

💡 Why it matters:

More objective data: Quantitative placental insights go beyond conventional ultrasound.
Earlier intervention: Standardized oxygen metrics protect at-risk babies sooner.
Broader access: Wearable tech brings advanced monitoring to diverse clinical settings.

We were treated to an insightful presentation from Suresh Venkatarayalu, Honeywell's Chief Technology Officer, on major advancements the company is driving in the industry. We couldn't be more excited about what's ahead for our partnership together!
