Today, UNC Charlotte’s Dasgupta Lab joins the second annual Cancer Cachexia Awareness Day to help shine light on cancer‑related weight loss and the need for better understanding and treatment.

Aneesha Dasgupta, assistant professor of biological sciences in the Klein College of Science, shares how her lab is advancing research into pancreatic cancer–associated cachexia through work supported by the National Cancer Institute.

Cancer cachexia affects up to 80% of people with advanced cancer, yet many have never heard the term.

Undergraduate lab member Kaustubh Tiwari received the Outstanding Undergraduate Poster Award at the 2026 Charlotte Regional Biomedical Sciences Symposium hosted by UNC Charlotte on Sept. 14.

Doaha Awad, a Ph.D. student in the Dasgupta Lab, received the Graduate Oral Presentation Audience Choice Award at the 2026 Biomedical Sciences Symposium for her research “Investigating the role of Perp in pancreatic cancer progression and cancer cachexia.”

Meet Zarah Rahman Blythe, a Klein College of Science biology major whose UNC Charlotte journey has been shaped by hands-on research, citizen science and the communities she built along the way. 🌿🧪

From leading the Pollinator Club and conducting the Great Southeastern Pollinator Census to founding the Crocheting Club and working in the chemistry stockroom, Zarah found purpose in connecting people, ecology and science. She also presented her research with Office of Undergraduate Research and spent countless hours exploring the UNC Charlotte Botanical Gardens , studying in Atkins and enjoying UREC traditions. 💚

As she graduates this August, Zarah carries forward her passion for ecology, sustainability and microbial research, and the friendships and mentorships that made her time at UNC Charlotte unforgettable. 🎓✨

Happy National Pollinator Week from Field Entomology, BIOL 3234. 🐝

Tuan Cao, Ph.D., leads the field course identifying the insects in the Piedmont of North Carolina. On this day, students took nets to temporarily capture pollinators while exploring their habitat near a pond.

Fun fact: moths are great pollinators too. 🐝🪰🦋Visit the Pollinator Garden, taken care of by UNC Charlotte Pollinator Club to visit other pollinating species.
