Dr. Sossina Haile earned her Masters from UC Berkeley, her PhD from MIT, and is now a faculty member at Cal Tech. So basically, she rules the world. Her research in Materials Science and Chemical Engineering is focused on generating innovative solutions to the climate crisis. Her TED talk focuses on utilizing CO2 from the atmosphere to generate fuel for energy.

Dr. Malika Jeffries-EL has received numerous awards for her research and for promoting diversity in chemistry and is now a research professor at Boston University whose work focuses on organic semiconductors. This research takes the earth abundant elements that we learned about in organic chemistry and uses principles of physical chemistry, such as HOMO/LUMO gaps that result in visible optics, to study the possibilities for new materials with applications in solar cells, materials science, and health technology. Dr. Jeffries-EL has published multiple research articles on the subject and we recommend a trip to the Jeffries-EL research group website for more information!

Today's chemist is super special for a couple of reasons: he is currently an Assistant Professor at UVA, his work track record isastounding, and he is my PI!! Dr. Gilliard is an inorganic chemist whose research focuses on clean energy and efficient materials. His focus is main-group chemistry, and he is a well-known name in this up and coming sub-field. His work in main-group is breaking new ground on the exciting possibilities of these elements. His work as a researcher and a mentor is exceptional, and evident in the successes of both he and his graduate students. We could not be more proud that Dr. Gilliard is part of the UVA chemistry department!

Dr. Tracy Johnson is the dean of the Division of Life Sciences and a professor of molecular, cell, and developmental biology at UCLA. Her research at the intersection of biology and biochemistry works to understand the processes that regulate RNA splicing and reactions that determine how cells express their genes and respond to their environment. Her studies focus on the function of the spliceosome as well as how the special markers on a cell’s chromatin affects splicing outcomes. Trigger Warning: Dr. Candice Bridge’s research deals focuses on helping victims of sexual assault.
In a previous post, we highlighted Dr. Bridge’s research at the University of Central Florida and her advocacy for underrepresented groups in forensics and science. Now, we want to share one of her recent publications for Black Chemists Week! In “Stronger associations of oil-based sexual lubricants and hygiene products using GCxGC-MS” Candice Bridge and Matthew Giardina evaluate a two dimensional gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy instrument for the differentiation of complex lubricants and personal hygiene products. This could offer a better way to identify lubricants in forensic analysis, so check out the full details in the article!

Dr. Malika Jeffries-EL is a trailblazer in the world of electronics research. She graduated from Wellesley College with a major in both Chemistry and Africana Studies before going on to complete her PhD program in chemistry at George Washington University. The focus of her research is organic semiconductors, which can be used in a variety of optical and electronic devices, including solar panels and LEDs. The use of organic compounds as semiconductors presents a variety of benefits compared to the silicon-based semiconductors currently used in most modern electronics. Dr. Jeffries-EL and her team have been working to address some of the issues in the development of these compounds which prevent them from being produced on a large scale.
Dr. Jeffries-EL has received a number of honors for her research. In 2018, Dr. Jeffries-EL was named an American Chemical Society fellow, which is one of the top honors awarded by the organization.
She worked as an Associate Professor at Iowa State University before becoming a faculty member of the Department of Chemistry at Boston University in 2016. Since July 1st of this year, Dr. Jeffries-EL began serving as the Associate Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at BU. She has also acted as a vocal advocate for diversifying the field of chemistry by serving as a mentor and supporting several organizations at BU dedicated to helping students from minority backgrounds.
