Day 1: officially in the books! 📚⚙️

What a first day! From new classes and new challenges to reconnecting with friends and getting back into the rhythm of life on Grounds, our UVA Engineering students kicked off the academic year in style.

The 2026–27 academic year is officially underway, and we couldn’t be more excited to have our UVA Engineering students back on Grounds!

Yesterday, students came together for Wahoo Welcome, kicking off the new year with friends, fun and plenty of Wahoo spirit. From welcoming our newest first-years to reconnecting with returning students, it was a great way to start another year of learning, discovery and Engineering for the Greater Good. ⚙️

What happens when you give 180 high school students a week to think like engineers?

They ask big questions. They test bold ideas. They collaborate, create and discover that some of the world's toughest challenges can start with a simple idea and a team willing to tackle it. And at the end, they might just see themselves as engineers.

This summer, students from across the region experienced life at UVA Engineering through our Emerging Engineers program. They explored research labs, learned from faculty, connected with current engineering students and put their creativity to the test by designing solutions to real-world engineering challenges.

“Now I know engineering is more than just creating physical things using math and physics, it’s a mindset of using creativity and curiosity to solve a problem for others,” one student said.

They may have arrived on Grounds as high school students, but they left as Emerging Engineers. 💙🧡
