About the Virginia Women’s Chorus:

The Virginia Women’s Chorus is committed to excellence in the performance of diverse classical and contemporary choral literature for treble voices. The Chorus is unique in that it is a student-run organization that hires a professional conductor. It is composed of students from numerous degree programs and individuals of the Charlottesville community and provides a fun and nurturing community.

In 1974, the Chorus was founded as the University of Virginia Women’s Chorus (UVAWC) under the direction of James Dearing. The ensemble gained national recognition by its performance at the American Choral Directors Association convention just two years later. In 1989, the Music Department elected to no longer fund single-sex organizations as part of its curriculum, and the Chorus disbanded. Five years later, the group was re-founded as the Virginia Women’s Chorus (VWC) through the dedicated efforts of several students and KaeRenae Mitchell.

Throughout its 50 years, the Chorus has flourished in the University community and beyond. Along with one full concert each semester, the Chorus also performs at numerous University events throughout the year. The Chorus has also enjoyed successful tours around the US and to Spain, Portugal, France and Canada.
