ICYMI!

We the People(hood)

For Jewish American Heritage Month, Director of Technology Solutions Carla Arton and Economics & Commerce Research Librarian Nicholas Cummins celebrate 250 years of Jewish America with works tracing an arc across American history: from the search for religious freedom, to migration and community building, to participation in civic life, and finally to ongoing reflection on identity and belonging.

‘Buried Cause’: In a new book, two UVA librarians analyze the unearthed Robert E. Lee monument cornerstone box

Conservator Sue Donovan was on the team who opened the 134-year-old commemorative box that had been buried beneath the Lee statue. Historian Ervin L. Jordan Jr. analyzed the contents inside for clues about the lives of Black Richmonders in the 1890s. Both had much to say about what they found.

The Small Special Collections Library Reading Room is closed this week as staff work on special projects, but the Harrison/Small building is open, and it’s a great time to catch the “ABCs of the UVA Library” exhibition before it closes on June 12. Curated by staff, the exhibition showcases the Library’s rich and varied collections and highlights the people who make those materials discoverable and accessible. From Artist’s Books to Zines, with everything in-between.

The building and gallery are open this week, 9-5 Monday-Friday. Stop by!

The University of Virginia Library with Thomas Jefferson's Monticello are pleased to present the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Distinguished Lecture with Vincent Brown, Charles Warren Professor of American History, Harvard University.

"How Do You Remember the Days of Slavery?: A Screening and Discussion" will include a 20-minute documentary following Professor Vincent Brown, as he travels to Jamaica at the invitation of the Jamaican Ministry of Culture, to speak at the island’s second annual Chief Takyi Day in St Mary Parish. The little explored history of Chief Takyi has long fascinated Professor Brown. In 2020, after more than a decade of dedicated research across multiple continents, he published his award-winning book, Tacky’s Revolt: The Story of an Atlantic Slave War, shedding crucial light on the brutally suppressed revolt which paved the road to abolition.
