Theta is the first Greek-letter women’s fraternity and was founded January 27, 1870, at Indiana Asbury university, now DePauw University, in Greencastle, Indiana. Theta’s four founders were forward-thinking women who w
ere among the first ever admitted to the college. They came together to share common interests of scholarship and friendship. The motivating force behind the group was Bettie Locke, who was asked to wear the badge of a men’s fraternity but was denied initiation. She decided to organize her own fraternity. What We Are
Theta is an international organization with college and alumnae chapters throughout the United States and Canada. The Fraternity is a not-for-profit Indiana corporation, with headquarters in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Fraternity’s philanthropic arm, the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation, supports the Fraternity’s educational programs; Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), Theta’s international philanthropy; and annually awards more than $220,000 in graduate and undergraduate scholarships to members. On April 3, 1976, the Delta Chi Chapter began at the University of Virginia.
